Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Submit works fine in live preview, not when moved to server

Well, I just moved my first application from localhost to an actual server and it was a big flop. The submit button that worked fine on localhost and live preview gives a database error on the server and I have no idea why. The error it gives me doesn't even make sense:

    Error executing SQL Insert
    INSERT INTO tocas_dba.TOCAS_SAVED_QUERYS (QUERY_DATE, QUERY_NAME, QUERY_DESCRIPTION, BREAK_1, BREAK_2, BREAK_3, BREAK_4, BREAK_5, BREAK_6, BREAK_7, BREAK_8, TOTALS, SHOW, TRIBAL_ONLY_CRITERIA, CHECKBOX_VALUES, EFFORT, UNITS, POUNDS, LANDINGS, LANDINGS2, AVG_PRICE, SPECIES_CRITERIA, TRIBES_CRITERIA, GEAR_CRITERIA, CATCH_AREA_CRITERIA, DISPOSITION_CRITERIA, DEALERS_CRITERIA, YEARS_CRITERIA, MONTH_CRITERIA, BEGIN_WEEK, END_WEEK, BEGIN_DATE, END_DATE, QUERY_TEXT, GENERATING_REPORT, QUERY_OWNER) VALUES (:saved_querys_QUERY_DATE, :saved_querys_QUERY_NAME, :saved_querys_QUERY_DESCRIPTION, :saved_querys_BREAK_1, :saved_querys_BREAK_2, :saved_querys_BREAK_3, :saved_querys_BREAK_4, :saved_querys_BREAK_5, :saved_querys_BREAK_6, :saved_querys_BREAK_7, :saved_querys_BREAK_8, :saved_querys_TOTALS, :saved_querys_SHOW, :saved_querys_TRIBAL_ONLY_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_CHECKBOX_VALUES, :saved_querys_EFFORT, :saved_querys_UNITS, :saved_querys_POUNDS, :saved_querys_LANDINGS, :saved_querys_LANDINGS2, :saved_querys_AVG_PRICE, :saved_querys_SPECIES_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_TRIBES_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_GEAR_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_CATCH_AREA_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_DISPOSITION_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_DEALERS_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_YEARS_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_MONTH_CRITERIA, :saved_querys_BEGIN_WEEK, :saved_querys_END_WEEK, :saved_querys_BEGIN_DATE, :saved_querys_END_DATE, :saved_querys_QUERY_TEXT, :saved_querys_GENERATING_REPORT, :saved_querys_QUERY_OWNER)

    Function requested is not supported

This is from a UX dialog tied to an SQL database table

I know the application is talking to the database because another page, a grid, submits just fine.

Perhaps server and local machine have different V12 builds? Very important that they be the same build.

If using Internet Explorer to preview, do both machines have the same version of IE?

Although you don't specify, I'm assuming your using MS SQL Server. If not you can ignore the rest of this post.

I've seen this a number of times now with users of my Calendar add on. In every case to date it has been due to the server hosting MS SQL Server (2008 or 2012) not having the correct files installed. This is from the Alpha Anywhere release notes:

        Tips

SQL Server 2008 - Date Fields - Occasionally, users report a problem when trying to update a MS SQL table that has a 'Date' field. The problem is caused because the correct Microsoft files are not installed on the machine where SQL Server is running. The error reported by SQL Server is:

        "Function requested is not supported"

The correct MIcrosoft drivers can be downloaded here:

Here are the links to the download on the Microsoft web site:

        X86 Package(sqlncli.msi) - 4549 KB
        X64 Package(sqlncli.msi) - 7963 KB
        IA64 Package (sqlncli.msi) - 11112 KB

Re: Submit works fine in live preview, not when moved to server

I tried updating both machines to the same version of the App server. That did not solve the problem.

          Jim,
If it was a problem with MS SQL Server, wouldn't I get the same error when running from localhost (development machine)? I don't. It works fine on localhost, but not on my server.

Running in Firefox from my development machine, just starting in different App servers.

Your development machine probably has the correct files. Every instance of this I've encountered has been the same. Works on local machine, doesn't work on server. Install the fix, problem goes away. Here's a clip of a support email one of my users sent me:

Odd thing, it runs just fine locally on my computer connected via a sql string to my remote servers SQL. If I log on to my site using the same sql server and the same version of App server, it gives me the error message.
He got it working by installing the sqlncli.msi for his version. In this case SQL Server 2012

I downloaded the latest version of sqlncli and installed it, even though it meant bouncing our Production SQLServer during the day. I am still getting the same error.

I changed all the date columns in my tables to datetime. I'm now published.
