Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Get summary total field in grid

I know this question has been asked a lot and I have searched extensively but no dice.

Is there a method to get the summary total value - preferably in JavaScript?

I don't think that helps Gandi. I need to get the value after rendering when the user changes amounts adds new records, etc.

Very good, Gandi. I didn't think it would work. i just tested it:

          x = e.summaryValues.Total_Time.Total
          e.javascript = "alert(" + x + ");"

          Thanks much!

alert(); is the javascript equivalent of ui_msg_box()

I'm just returning the summary total for testing purposes.

Re: Get summary total field in grid

Yeah that part (the alert --> msg box thing) I get -

it's the stuff in the parentheses it looks like nothing to me.
in other words in a grid for an initial value I might say it equals

                city + " " + state

so it would evaluate to something like

                Reno Nevada

in your code all I see is an x

You guys seem to just know what to do and I stare at it like aliens landed right there...

Re: Get summary total field in grid

Well, I'm thinking the aliens landed sometime ago and took over.

                  "alert(" + x + ");"

It's just a string concatenation. x is a variable holding the total amount. To pass the JavaScript back to the browser it needs to be in a string, thus the quotes. So "alert(" is the first part of the string. Then I put in x, which Alpha will automatically display as the total summary value, such as 33.5 or something. Then I close the string with the remaining JS syntax. So it's as if I did this: "alert(33.5);" which will display a dialog with that number. Make sense?

Re: Get summary total field in grid

FYI: I can't use this method. I'm posting to the parent grid and the OnSummarySectionRender posts the previous value, not the most recent total. That's what I thought might happen.

                    Any other ideas?

(In the mean time I'm writing directly to the sql table, but that's ugly...)

                      Peter,
Thanks for clearing that up! I hope that you figure out your problem but as you may have surmised - it aint comin from me!

If I had to suggest something though I would suggest ignoring the x and just use the x to return a value for a global variable - then use a globally declared variable, and that way the code would have to run to get the most recent value.
You know my expertise level at this point so maybe I am all wrong but maybe it will help you think of another route too!
My mother used to say I could always serve as a bad example if nothing else!

Ah, yes, global variables. Alas they are not available in the web environment. The closest we have is session variables which is another matter altogether. If only it were so. But thanks for your thought, Charles.

If you can get the one form to return the original value, then set the calculated value to add that in...seems simple to me. Just create a hidden field to hold the returned OnSummarySectionRender value since it holds the previous value then set the GRAND TOTAL as a calculated field to add in the returned value plus anything else you want, discounts payments received etc. - hope that makes sense.

I know that will work as I do darned near exactly that myself!

I am not sure you are done with this question.
                            if not
I have created a screencast to show how the fields in the parent grid can be updated when you change something in the child grid. take a look at this.

populating value from child grid to parent grid
                            http://screencast.com/t/NHfRl8j6v4

if this is what you had in your mind and wanted to know how to do it then take a look at the following screeancast, if not please ignore.
if you do watch the screencast, it is a gift for the season to you.
                            how was it done

Thanks much Gandhi. That's exactly what I did and it didn't work. It kept giving me the previous total, not the current total. Now after viewing your two videos I re-enabled the code and now it works. Maybe Alpha was bollixed up in memory some how. Anyway, thanks for the videos which made me revisit the issue.
