Does anyone know how to invoke a javascript action (say, open a grid) by clicking on a column heading in a grid component?

Use the canSort client-side event to trigger the 'click' of a hidden button that opens your component.

Andy - first, a belated "thank you" for the advice.

I'm revisiting this after some time away from it. Which grid method would I use to accomplish this? I'm struggling to find the correct one.

canSort - triggered when you click a sortable grid heading.
See http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11preview/videos_v11.htm and look at #37.
This will give you an idea of how to use these grid events.

So you need to set up a Action Button to open the new grid and include it in the page. Then hide the button.

In canSort, you will simply wish to trigger the hidden button's click() method - which will open the new grid.

Thanks for the quick reply, Andy. I'm trying to go this route, but now getting a js error, "Object doesn't support property or method 'click'. Any idea?

Your canSort javascript call could look something like (edited):

ele = $('{grid.componentName}_BUTTONS_MYBUTTON');
ele.click();

Your action button would be named MYBUTTON, of course.

Andy - right on target - thank you!! I also tried:

{grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1(1,'1',this);

which seems to work also (found it in another post).

Now, my only challenge is figuring out how to open different grids depending upon which column heading is clicked. Next challenge!

In canSort, you can test for the column number only, but at least it is something.

alert(e.sortColumn);

For those wondering how to check what object properties are available, try this in your js events:

alert (JSON.stringify(e));

Thanks again, Andy. I think that could work, but then how could i apply that to evaluating in the IF statement? For example:

{grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1(1,'1',this);
