Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Internal Images ($$file) and HTML editor images not showing up

    Hi All,

I've been having an problem with the internal images not showing up in my web application. They work fine in Working Preview and Live Preview but not on the web. Even if I go to the address for the image directly it doesnt work. If I use the web browser on the computer with the application server they dont work either.

The images for the buttons in the HTML editor on dialogs dont show up either.

There are also gray bars on my buttons that shouldnt be there.

A while back this happened and one of our IT guys updated the server computer (windows update not anything to do with Alpha 5) and the problems went away for quite a while. Unfortunately the issues are back.

Has anyone had anything similar happen or know what might be causing this?

Here's what it looks like currently when running it live

    impr1.pngimpr2.png

Here's what it looks like currently in Live Preview, which is what it SHOULD look like

    lpvw1.pnglpvw2.png

As you can see, images that I've added to the project myself work fine. It's just the built in images and the HTML editor images that don't show up. That and the gray bars seem to point to CSS issues somewhere maybe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Weird, never seen it. Try using Firebug to figure out what is going wrong or if there are any console errors.
Your app server may be on strike - offer her more money and a dedicated parking space!

      Hi Andy,
      How's it going?

I haven't posted in a while since I've been too busy doing the rest of my work to refine my app. It's been working well in a production atmosphere for over a year now; mostly. This problem happened the first time about 6 months ago and has just reared it's ugly head again. I have all the licenses to upgrade to Alpha Anywhere but haven't had the chance to do the switch yet. Maybe that will fix it....

I was just hoping someone had seen this and would be able to point me in the right direction. I've tried Firebug but beyond checking the elements and knowing what images are supposed to pull up, I'm not that proficient with it. How would I go about checking for errors with Firebug?

I believe this does have something to do with the app server itself. There seems to be some problem with it serving up the proper CSS/HTML.

Also, if it helps. When viewing the site from some peoples computers it still looks fine, until you clear their browser cache.

Could try reinstalling App server. Also try republishing EVERYTHING.
In firebug, you would be inspecting the missing images to see what the problem is.
Sounds link the app server is not serving up the requests properly.

I've tried republishing everything a few times and it doesn't seem to help. I haven't tried re-installing the application server yet and I'm not sure I want to do that unless I've got some time just in case there are issues. That's the same reason I haven't upgraded to V12.

As far as Firebug goes, I can just see that it's pointing to an image, and what the file name for that image is. That's how I determined that it's only the internal images that seem to be having an issue. For instance, the Excel image that's not showing up is: images/$$file.export.excel.png.a5image

Anything that I've added to the project myself; in other words, images that get uploaded to the server on publish, work fine. Anything that's internal and some parts of the CSS don't work.

Yes, first reinstall the app server build patch only. See if that clears up things.
If it doesn't, then uninstall, reboot, reinstall the full app server build and reconfigure again.
            It will work.

Well, reinstalling the patch didn't work. In fact, it screwed up something else. I had to reinstall the patch again and it fixed the issue it created the first time. So, something is screwed up. It shouldn't behave differently each time the patch is installed.

I guess this is going to have to wait until I can install V12. I'm not sure it's worth the risk of downtime to reinstall V11 and I don't seem to have the the full app server file that includes the patch, I'd have to install an older version and then patch it.

What build are you on? One of us may have it stored.

Also, you should publish your project on your local development machine and see if the built-in developer app server works with your project.

Your other option is to use the latest pre-release build (Sept 2013, but backup you project first of course), recompile the project so that it works, and try installing that app server. It may fix bugs that you could be suffering under.

You do not necessarily need to upgrade to v12 because of this issue.

                  OK,
                  So,

Installing some security updates on the Windows Server 2003 computer fixed this. Again.

I don't think it was the updates that had anything to do with it but rather some garbage that is building up somewhere that the updates clear out.

Does anyone know if there is some kind of cache on the server computer itself (not part of the application server program) that could be cleared in the future to fix this? Is it possible it is caused by some wayward registry entries?

HAH! If I wasn't bald I'd be pulling my hair out.

I upgraded to V12 since I was going to anyway and as soon as I published my files it went back to doing the same thing again. So, I'm now wondering if my workspace is corrupted somehow.

Yup, and still is. I've submitted a bug report but beyond having me check that the images are allowed in the security setup (which was fine) I don't have any answers yet.

It does sound like an operating-system issue, possibly registry-related.
Or, when the browser makes an 'http' request for an A5 image file (like images/$$generic.notepad.png.a5image), could the operating system (or firewall/antivirus) be intercepting the transmission somehow and treating it as a threat (because of the .a5image extension)?

I've thought of that initially. The funny thing is that I would assume that everything would work fine on the web browser on the server computer itself if that were the case. Maybe I'm mistaken? We do have a nest of firewalling and security internally and are running Novel so there certainly could be some issues there. The funny part is that updates to the server seem to fix it for a short period of time.

I hope we have it fixed, or at least we have an idea of what's going on and work around it.

Even though the "user" of that computer when I log on to it has full admin rights the application server doesn't seem to run with those rights. When my I.T. guy, whose admin account created my own admin account logs on and starts the server the problem goes away.

This problem seems to have something to do with some security patch on Windows Server 2003. I have no idea which one but the server seems to give higher rights to the admin account that created my admin account. This is really strange but as long as I have him log in and start the server it SEEMS to work. At least for now.
