Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Initial Value Error: Variable "Alpha" not found.

I am using a grid component's detail view:
Within the server side ongridinitialize I am creating a session variable: Session.myNewSessionVariable = "Alpha"
I am setting the initial value property of a textbox field in the grid to this variable: = Session.myNewSessionVariable
I am getting this error message within the textbox: Initial Value Error: Variable "Alpha" not found.

This is weird since the error message contains the value of Session.myNewSessionVariable, but seems to say that it thinks Alpha is the name of the variable an its empty?

    What am I mssing?

    Much appreciated,
    Bob

Re: Initial Value Error: Variable "Alpha" not found.

It's probably because you didn't "dim" the variable.

    dim Session.myNewSessionVariable as C = "Alpha"

    OR

    dim Session.myNewSessionVariable as C
    Session.myNewSessionVariable = "Alpha"

Re: Initial Value Error: Variable "Alpha" not found.

Tried that, no go, wondering if it is in the wrong event? Since the field I am using is in the detail view, which I m using to create and edit new records?

However since it is a session variable once it is created it should be available to any page or component in the project, or at least that is the way I understand it?

      Thanks again

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood something....reading comprehension fail.... I guess that when I saw what you wrote, I assumed the first part was your xbasic. In any case it does need to be dimmed but you probably already had that.

In your initial value, try to use Session.myNewSessionVariable without the equal sign in front of it.

I looked at one of my grids and that's what I'm doing in that particular instance. I'll have to search through more and see if I'm using them somewhere else.

Thank You that worked, the help under the property is foggy on this it explains that you start your expression with an =, then mentions session. variable, but doesn't specify = or no = sign.
          Much Appreciated

Re: Initial Value Error: Variable "Alpha" not found.

I am using Alpha Anywhere (v12) and just encountered this same issue. Is totally weird because I have been putting an equals sign in front of session variables for the initial value on a field in a grid for a long time and had no issue. Now all of the sudden I had the issue. So I tried removing the equals sign and it took care of it. What was REALLY odd is that I have another field on that grid that used an equals sign for the session variable as initial value and it worked. The working one is a numeric field and the one that didn't work with the equals sign was a character field. But I've used the = sign on other character fields and it has worked before. I don't know.... But ANYWAY, thanks so much for this thread. It helped me get this resolved (for now, because I find this totally confusing as to whether to use an equals sign or not...) . Like you say the help under the property is pretty foggy.
