Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

IS NULL in a MySQL tirgger...how do I do it?

I have this trigger set in a MySQL table.
It will, of course, not work when the value in AMOUNTPAID is a null value.

How can I redo this trigger to accommodate a null value in the amountpaid field? I think I need to use an if statement in the trigger, but I cannot figure out the correct syntax.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

CREATE DEFINER=`root`@`localhost` TRIGGER `dbname`.`acct_upd` AFTER INSERT ON dbname.accounts_paid FOR EACH ROW
    BEGIN
    UPDATE accounts
    SET accounts.balance = accounts.balance - new.amount, accounts.amountpaid = accounts.amountpaid + new.amount
    WHERE accounts.invno = new.invno;
    END;

    Thanks,
    mike

You can use the IFNULL() function.

    Code:
    SET accounts.balance = ifnull(accounts.balance,0) - ifnull(new.amount,0), accounts.amountpaid = ifnull(accounts.amountpaid,0) + ifnull(new.amount,0)

Just a thought: Maybe you should default your values to 0 instead of NULL...

IFNULL will work, but the community largely favors COALESCE(new.amount, 0), which does pretty much the same thing. COALESCE returns the first non-NULL parameter, or NULL if they're all NULL.

IFNULL is a MySQL specific function. MSSQL does not have an IFNULL. But it does have a COALESCE. COALESCE is in the the SQL standard, so a lot of SQL DBs support it.

Alternatively, you can just write IF(new.amount IS NULL, 0, new.amount). A bit wordier, but just as portable.

        just another thought:
why there is a need to keep the balance in the table. can't they be calculated where needed. so there will be amount credited and debited only. wherever you need the calculation can be performed and reported.
        another thought:
in finance industry there is no NULL. there are only positive numbers, either they are on the left side or on the right side ( credit or debit).

          Hi,
          Thanks for your replies.
I could not get the ISNULL() function to work. I tried all kinds formatting including what you had Jim, but the trigger would fail as having an invalid syntax. So I gave up on that.
I changed the default on the table so that the field would be 0, not null when a new row was added, updated all null values to 0, so Sarah that obviously works fine. Also tried the COALESCE function, but couldn't that to work either. The zero takes care of the problem.
And gandhi, the table is basically the accounts receivable table, so when we run statements, the report only has to look for a balance <> 0 and it will print. Saves the time to search through all the payment rows.

          Thanks Again,

          Mike
