Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

my first web component and have several questions

if someone can tell me if i'll be able to implement the following, i'd appreciate it. don't have to tell me how, just point me to where I can find some answers, because I can't find them on my own.

the application will never reside offsite, it's on a local windows server. most data entry will be on the network through a native form . in certain instances i may need to enter a record through a browser.

    1. use grid component or dialog component? I see a submit button component when I convert to a dialog, not when I use a web component. I need to add some code to the submit button that looks up some email addresses in several tables before it actually writes the record. now I have an xbasic script that runs and formats and sends the email when the save button is pressed on the native form.
can any of this xbasic code be used or do I have to rewrite it?

    2. if i'm going to run the application on the server, can I publish to iis to be able to enter records using the browser?

like I mentioned, i'm new to this. I've written plenty of native xbasic and excel vba code, but know absolutely nothing about html or javascript. so, I don't know what's needed or when to use it.

Re: my firsst web component and have several questions

good morning, I will attempt to answer these as best I can as possible:
whether your application resides in your local windows server or not when accessed via a browser, essentially it can be accessed from anywhere, just not limited to your office, even though that is what you might do.

about grid and dialog. these are two different components either can be used to data entry or to display data. in my personal opinion grid displays data better dialog enters data better.

the xbasic codes that runs in your native form may possibly be reused if they are converted to functions and then to an aex files and published to the server or just copy the code and add to the grid or dialog and reference the fields properly. for example if your last name is tbl.last_name in the web it will e.datasubmitted.last_name etc

as far as I know IIS is not integrated yet, you will need to install application server and publish all you files to that server. and then you can view via a browser. you will not be able to publish to IIS, it does not know a5 codes the application server converts those to html code for the server to display

    hope this helps.

Re: my firsst web component and have several questions

yes gandhi, that helps. a question about publishing to the local application server.
if all I have is an entry grid or dialog, can the be published and accessed? or do I need some sort of start page? it seems when I publish to the local host, I can't load anything.

Re: my firsst web component and have several questions

only pages are viewed. the components need to be placed in a page then you can view them.
alternatively if you place them in a tabbedui_component then alpha creates a tabbedUi_page for you based on that component and you see that (again) page.
only pages are seen, not he components.

Re: my firsst web component and have several questions

ok, probably sounds stupid, but I can view a live preview, I just can't figure out how to publish it so it can be viewed in a browser. I just use the defaults when publishing, but then I can't access it through the browser. don't know if I need an a5w page or not. where can I find out the basics, I can't seem to find what I want in the help file.

Re: my firsst web component and have several questions

ok, I added my grid component to an a5w page and got it to display.
