Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dialog to fire 'required' but only if field visible

Have a dialog with a number of fields including one that is show / hide. All fields have 'required value' property set true.
Problem is the rule fires even if the show / hide field is is hidden. I know this because the required field error message shows on the dialog even when all the visible fields have data. It must be the hidden field that is firing the rule.

How can I fire the 'required value' rule but only if the field is visible on the dialog?
    Thanks

Re: Dialog to fire 'required' but only if field visible

it is quite possible you have turned on the validation rules and hid the field and the ux is doing what it is supposed to do throwing an error when the required field is empty.
    think differently..
the text box abc needs to be filled, it may be hidden if condition z is true. don't enable rules in the field level.
go to the dialogValiate function there you write a code essentially looks like this
    Code:
if the condtion z is false then
      if abc = "" then
         dialogValidate.hasError = .t.
dialogValidate.errorText = "abc cannot be blank"
         end if
    end if
    that should work
ps. this is written as is, not tested. if it does not work post back I can test it for you and update as needed.

      Thanks Gandhi
The dialog that has the hidden fields is embedded in another dialog. The submit button is on the 2nd dialog.
This is my dialogValidate function, not sure if this looks approx right. If yes,how do you call it?

      If e.datasubmitted.asthmaLast = "0-3 months" then
      If e.datasubmitted.asthmaLastYear = "" then
      dialogValidate.hasError = .t.
dialogValidate.errorText = "abc cannot be blank"
      end if
      end if

You may need to reference parent child nomenclature, I think.
Post back your dialog set up and what hides whar, I will check for you

Re: Dialog to fire 'required' but only if field visible

Not sure if this is what you mean Gandhi .
Using a different hide show to my post

            Dialog name: respiratoryAsthma.
            Field: Medication (yes / no)
Container_14: hide if Medication = no
            Field: MedsWhenLast sits inside Container_14.

The dialog respiratoryAsthma is embeddded in dialog respiratoryMainQuestion

So the dialog asks about the last time medication was taken but only if the person has taken medication. If the person has never taken medication then the 'last time taken' question is not asked. If person has taken medication, and if MedsWhenLast is therefore visible then it is required

            Code:
            If e.datasubmitted.Medication = "Yes" then
            	       If e.datasubmitted.MedsWhenLast = "" then
            		   dialogValidate.hasError = .t.
dialogValidate.errorText = "abc cannot be blank"
            	       End if
            end if

looks like all fields are in one dialog then it should work as you have written.
check it out and see, if in doubt put a debug(1) and that might show errors if there are any.

Do I need to call the function from somewhere, what triggers it?

res the entire dialog validate function somewhere in the middle it sets the dialogHasError to false, you will need comment it out if you want your code to run properly.

The submit button is on respiratoryMainQuestion (the dialog that has the embeddeded dialog). There is no submit on the dialog that has all the questions (respiratoryAsthma). Not sure if this makes a difference.

Dont really understand your last post, will try figure t out.

                      Thanks for the help Gandhi..

Re: Dialog to fire 'required' but only if field visible

you need to give an example or real dialog to see what needs to be done.
there may be an issue parent child etc.,
the submit button triggers the dailogValidate function, alpha automatically declares there were no errors and the error message is blank. however if you are customizing then you will comment that out ( they foolishly put that code some where in the middle or bottom, you don't see it unless you scroll down. this will pose a problem if you do not scroll down. since you will write your code on the top immediately following declaration your conclusion will be overwritten by alpha and you will think there is a bug.

                          Excellent!
                          Commented out 'dialogValidate.hasError = .f. and 'dialogValidate.errorText = "" in dialogValidate and code works.

But of course this solution adds new wrinkles. Will write new post later.
                          Thank you Gandhi
