Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to Show All Employees? A departure From The Usual Way of Doing Business

    My customer has used a single flat file table for many years. Now, it's time to update the system because they want to use 2 or 3 computers for data entry at the same time. So, the flat file has been divided into 3 tables along with a couple of look-up tables for employees and sales tax. This works well. That is, until I get to an pre-printed invoicing form. This form is taken by the employee into the field when a job is performed for new customer, sort of a "invoice on the fly". My customer wants all employee names and their license numbers printed on the form so that when this situation occurs, all the employee has to do is circle his name.

    In a flat file table, I could simply have 9 fields, Emp1 - Emp9. I've thought about placing these fields in table3 and then populate them with a lookup. However, there is no way for the lookup to know which employee to put in which field or to prevent duplicates. IOW, there has to be a unique link other than just the 'Tech' field. So, I also added an ID field to both tables which may solve that issue. The issue of adding new employees and removing or not including former employees remains a big issue as does indices.

    The other way I tried:

    I did add the lookup table to the set and with the form based on the set, I tried adding a browse to the form. However it does not show the data. The only way I can get the employee list to show is to place a Record List List Box on the form. Hey, that works great but there is no way to remove all of the List box so only the data is there. "No Border" only removes the border. The header bar, vertical slide and the frame still remain. One last bump in the road. It would be very helpful to break it into 4 columns, or 2 columns of 5 records, Emp1-Emp6 Lic # and name in columns 1&2 and Emp7-Emp10 Lic # and name in columns 3&4.

    Maybe someone has done this before and found a way? This has become a nightmare.

    WOW>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I figured it out. No sooner had I posted and I thought, "Try a grid". I created a simple read only grid, removed the style and everything else that would show. I linked it to the form by employee name. It did not show the data. After playing around a bit, I realized I didn't need a link and simply used this filter: isnotblank("Employee"). Walla, it works. This took me less than 1 minute to create the grid and embed it on the form and 2-3 minutes more to experiment with the filter part. I doubt this could have been done without the ability to embed a grid. Shazam? How COOL is that?

      Yes, but a grid isn't always the answer. Grids linked to a form do not and will not work until Alpha completes the conversion to Google. (Assuming I understood the explanation). Buttons opening a grid and a grid on a form but not linked to the form, do work.

          Here is a way to get the list of employees. I am assuming you are .dbf tables from what you said.
          This would require that you add a logical field to the employee table and call it something list invok Change the value of the logical field invok to .t. (True) and would get it working nicely and you can use this in a grid or a report.

          This sample gives a list of district code and districtname from the district table when the 'statement' field is true:

          districtlist = table.external_record_content_get("district","district + districtname","district","statement")
          ?districtlist
          = AU Austin
          DA Dallas
          HO Houston
          LV Las Vegas
          PH Phoenix

          Then use this command to get rid of the duplicates.
          districtlist = *remove_duplicates(districtlist,crlf())

            Sure enough. Gotta admit though, I'm behind the Pack but their work is cut out for them. Rogers and crew are the underdogs.

                All the transition from IE to Google has not been done and until is is, there will be this hiccup. Don't know when it will be finished but I hope soon.
