Hello fellow A5'rs,
I was apprehensive about creating a page for my staff to enter a new customer when needed. I had only been using the web side of A5v11 to view data already in the database and I have it set up as read only. Now I want to add an entry form that is accessible in the browser. I surprised myself and I figured it out. I now have a grid that I can use on the web-side for data entry. However, I do not understand all the features of the grid like I do for a form I create on the desktop application. I need help.
In my desktop application (where we normally add new customers) I have an entry form that opens and immediately displays the new customer number, as generated using the auto-increment field rule in the table structure. I have the field on the form but it is auto-filled and cannot be changed by the user. They can only view this field. This has worked great for years.
On my new web page entry grid I cannot figure out how to get the same behavior. I figured out that if I delete the customer number field from the grid the database does add the correct customer number after the grid entry is submitted. If I then display another grid on another page I can view the new customer number. This is working for now. But I would like to do it the same way I do it on the desktop form.
How do I get the grid entry form to automatically display the new auto-incremented number when creating a new customer?
I'm not sure why this works on the desktop form. How does the form know how to display the new number when the record has not been saved/entered to the table yet? I imagine some programming that "saves" the new record and then immediately refreshes the form for further changes. But on the web page the grid can't display a value from the field since it hasn't been created yet? I'm just guessing here as I don't really know how this works.
Can someone help me? I can't find the appropriate documents to read to learn how to do this. I have the books and videos for learning the web side of A5v11 but so far I can't find what I am looking for.
Thanks,
Sean
