Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Loosing session variables

I have a web application that uses several session variable.
Every once in a while I seem to loose all of them

I even suspect that I am loosing the current user that is logged in because I have a code block to identify when I loose certain session variables. That text me when something is wrong (below is a piece of that code block). The function A5ws_GetCurrentUser() is not returning the current user information that I am expecting.

    if variable_exists("session.svUserRecId")<>.t. .or. variable_exists("session.svUserID")<>.t. then
    session.svUserId = A5ws_GetCurrentUser()
    SendTextMSG("9417300215","ACNav User issue: "+session.svUserId )

A little more information: I have one UX that is always running and the entire program is navigated through that UX, I do have a session time out on that UX that prompts the user when a session is about to expire and upon expiration, the program redirects to the log in page. I don't suspect a session time out because I have the problem when I remove the session time out as well.

Also when this happens, it is usually when the customer is actively using the system.

Does anyone know how I can loose session variables, what should I look for and how can I prevent it.

    Thank,
    Virginia Witter

    Re: Loosing session variables

This seems to be happening to my users when they are using a laptop and shut the lid for a long period of time or on a tablet when they are paused. I'm still trying to track it down. Are your users doing anything like that?

No - They are actively using the app. They may be on one screen for 5 minutes but that is the only lag time.

        Re: Loosing session variables

I have tried testing in development by setting the session time out to 1 min and watching it. In my case, the user will tell me they have been using the app, but I think they suspended the app and when they start using it again they will say I was right in the middle of using it... I'm still trying to duplicate this problem...

I have a session time out that will log them out of the system, so my issue is not due to the session timing out

            Re: Loosing session variables

You could try adding a HELP button in your navigation which your user could press if he has problems. It could trigger a popup window that queries the server and displays info like "A5ws_GetCurrentUser()" (and other server variables) which the user could report to you for debugging purposes. See below for ideas.

Virginia have you found a solution for this issue? I thought my issue had to do with the session timing out, however, it seems like it's the same issue that you are having.
