Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Moving A5 Licenses to new computer

Hello Alpha Five forum. It's been a while since I've been on the forum but I still use A5v11 everyday in my business. It has come time to retire my old computer and move A5 Developer and A5 Application Server.

I tried to move two A5v11 licenses to my new computer but I can't get the programs to accept the licenses.

The Developers program says the license is assigned to a computer that has long been recycled. I can’t use that copy of the software to deactivate it since the computer no longer exists.

The Application Server program also won’t deactivate. I am in the process of taking the old computer offline and want to move the AS license to the new machine. On the old computer I got a message that said the program could not access some files. I tried removing the license and shutting down the server but it didn’t work to release the license. On the new computer I was told to disable UAC and I did that. But I still can’t activate the license because it says it’s in use.

I need some help at the Alpha Software company to remove the licenses for the two old computers that I am no longer using so I can activate the software on the new computer. I did this several years ago when I upgraded from Windows XP but I can’t remember the exact procedure. Maybe it was by email.

I went back into my emails but I can find the right email to contact. On the website there is a sales email. Do I use that? Or is there a support email I should be using?

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi Sean,

If I remember right, the "preferred" and easiest way to transfer a v11 license is to give the new computer the same name as the retired computer.

Hi madtowng, thank you very much, I appreciate the assistance. Yes, I had reviewed some past messages where that procedure was outlined for me. Unfortunately something went wrong and the trick of using the same computer name is not working. When I tried to first deactivate the current Application Server software and detach it from the license I was unable to use the deactivate routine. I can't remember the exact error but it said it could not write to one of the system directories and left me with the deactivation undone. I ended up removing the license and shutting down the server in hopes that it would allow me to activate on the new computer, which I had previously renamed to the same name as the old computer. It didn't work and now I am stuck with not being able to either deactivate the old computer or activating the new computer.

For the Developers version of the software I am trying to move my unused license. But when I try it says it is assigned to a computer I no longer have in service. Apparently I used that license on that computer but I never used it and I have since recycled the computer. So again, I am stuck. I can't deactivate from the old computer and I can't activate on the new computer.

      Thanks for the help,
      Sean

I made some progress. The Developers version is now activated on the new computer. When I setup the new computer I used the same computer name as the old computer and then I changed the name of the old computer. I was able to get the activation to go through only for the Developers version. I still cannot get the Application Server to activate.

I did find an email address for customer service in the help section. I will try that. Hopefully it's still current. ([email protected])

Update - I finally got it to work with the Application Server. I turned off the new computer. I went back to the old computer and renamed it the same name as I had previously. I turned off UAC and rebooted. When I started up the Applications Server I opened the sessions tab and added my license number and restarted the server. When I checked again it was activated. Then I stopped the server and clicked on Deactivate. This time I got a message stating the deactivation was successful. (The last time I got some error message - maybe due to UAC still being on, not sure). Then I stopped the server again and changed the name of the computer again and shut down. I went back to the new computer and tried to Activate again and this time it worked!

I still have one license for the Developer version that needs to be reset. I will try emailing customerservice@alphasoftware directly. But at least for now I am back with both the Developer and Application Server licenses on the new computer.

I'm about to do something similar - thanks for sharing the tips. You are probably on up-to-date versions of Win10? Can I ask how Developer and App Server are working for you?

              agillbb , yes, I have the latest Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit. I replaced two Core2Duo + 3GB machines with two Core i5 + 8GB RAM.

The A5v11 programs work fine on Windows 10. I haven't done much developing in about four or five years. But what I have is working good. I am having some problems getting the security features of the Application Server to work. But that is probably more my own defect than any issue with the software. I'll be working on that after I finish setting up my new machines on the LAN. I'm an amateur admin so it takes a while to get everything sorted.
