Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Moving A5V11 WAS to Windows 10 from XP

    Hi All,

I've been reading here about Windows 10 and for the most part it seems A5V11 works with W10 for most users. I have the Runtime running and use it daily for accessing my database over the LAN in the office. But I have not started using the Developers version yet. But my real fear is moving my WAS to this new W10 box. Does anyone have an opinion of the risk?

I have A5V11 WAS running on an XP box currently. I am trying to close down all our XP systems and moving them to Windows 10. I have already moved my own desktop to W10. But the WAS is still on the old XP box for now because I have been afraid to move it. It's working and I use it every day. But I want to shut down the XP system. I haven't read much here about V11 WAS and W10. Mostly the discussions are about Runtime or Developer. Does anyone see any difference with the WAS version? Are there any significant differences from the Developer version that I might need to prepare for before I move the WAS to this W10 box? I don't yet have another W10 box to experiment with. When I do this I am going to go live immediately so I am a little concerned that I might break the app when I move to W10. I'm not a professional developer. I use A5V11 in my business and it is live everyday. So making changes can be intimidating. I don't went to break this. Any thoughts?

Do I need Alpha Software's help to move server?

My apologies if this has been answered already in some other thread. I've been away and my searches today haven't answered my question. So here goes,

I want to move my copy of A5V11 WAS from my old XP box to my new W10 box. I did this a couple of times several years ago with previous versions. But I can't remember if it is the same procedure for when moving the developer version. Do I need to have the same name for the new computer as the old? In that case I had to get the help of Alpha Software to disable the old name so I could register the new computer. Does the WAS work that way? Or can I disable the license myself and just move it and re-enable on the new computer? When I installed the Developer version on this new W10 box it just registered. No issues. And the computer names are not the same. So maybe this is not an issue anymore? Or WAS works differently from the Developer anyway?

    Thanks,
    Sean

P.S. I'm an amateur developer and don't do these things everyday (more like every two or three years!) and as I get older my memory on what I did escapes me. it's probably trivial but I really don't want to screw up this move to W10.

Go into the old server and unregister the license from that server.

Then you should be able to register the same license on the new server.

It doesn't matter if the server name is the same as the old server or different.

The developer license works the same way.

If you have lost or broken the old computer that it was licensed on or for some other reason you can not unregister the license, then you would need Alpha's help.

Install V11 on your new system and try it out.

The WAS server will work in demo mode for 30 minutes at a time. (Then you can restart it to get an additional 30 minutes.)

So you can do all your testing on the new server without actually moving to it.

When you are sure you are ready, then move the license.

Ahh, good. I didn't know it had a 30 minute trail period built in. I will give that a try. Thanks.

Okay, great. That's good news. Thanks for your help. I will get this done before this XP box finally crashes.

Re: Moving A5V11 WAS to Windows 10 from XP

I finished moving the server program to the W10 box today. It wasn't as straight forward as I had hoped but I got through it.

First, W10 uses port 80 for IIS service by default. I had to turn it off to get past an error message. I changed the port being used by A5v11AS and it worked. I deactivated the XP install. Then when i went to activate the server on W10 I got another error message about disabling UAC. It took a while to figure that out. Turns out you have to use the registry editor and reboot. Once I got UAC off I was able to successfuly activate the server on the W10 box.

When I tested the server using "localhost" I got some errors. Something was wrong with the grids. I decided to re-publish. But I could not get the profile to use my custom webroot folder. It kept wanting to use C:\A5Webroot. So, I finally caved in and just let it publish to that folder. It works now.

So, a few initial hiccups but now I have all three A5v11 programs moved on to this new W10 box (Full, Runtime, Application Server).

              Thanks for all the help.
