Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5_encrypt_string()

    Hello all,

    I have a table where some of the data needs to be encrypted when it is saved and then when the table is being used I need to a5_decrypt_string(). I know how to use the functions what I'm confused about is how to set it up. I have a simple test table with a field "FullName". I want to have the user type in the full name, when they save it it encrypts the data but it needs to stay unencrypted on the screen so they can see what they have type and so they can do searches.

    It seems like I'd need one field that is unencrypted and one that is encrypted but then that defeats the purpose of encrypting the field. Then another question I have is where do I decrypt the name field when the grid is loaded.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    -John

      Hi Gandhi,

      Thanks

        Re: a5_encrypt_string()

        looks like if i test with editable grid decrypting make the grid dirty and wants me to save again making this revolving door.
        i may test with dialog and read only grid later on and let you know unless of course someone else knows better way.

          Re: a5_encrypt_string()

          Hi Gandhi,

          Yes, it's a bit tricky.

          I have my grid open, users enter data into a field I've called "NameEncrypt", move to the next record etc and enter 10 new records, then click [Submit] and the CanInsertRecord fires off the following:

          DataSubmitted.NameEncrypt = a5_encrypt_string(DataSubmitted.NameEncrypt,"abc")

          but then the fields on the screen all now display the encrypted data so it would seem I need another field to hold the unencrypted data but doing so negates having the encrypted field.

          I could have the grid based on a query which has a fake field, "NameNormal" ie: NameNormal:"" and then as the grid is loaded I would decrypt the "NameEncrypt" field and put the contents into "NameNormal".

          My question there is, where do I put the code in order to do that? OnGridInitialize, OnGridExecute? and what would the code be?

          Thanks

          -John

            Re: a5_encrypt_string()

            i did that in onGridExecute, which fires every time.
            but i was just doing it in updatable grid, normally i use dialog to enter data grid to read data.
            so when i added the javascript to call the ajaxcallback, to decrypt, it does, then the grid is dirty, wants me to save it.
            as i said i will play again later tonight if i see some way to do. i will post back.

                Re: a5_encrypt_string()

                i am able to do using read only grid and adding a button on the grid row, but so far not succeeded in automatically updating the grid.
                here is how i did the test.
                read only grid, button to open a dialog to add data, button to update the grid row. all works well.
                but i haven't succeeded in creating an action where when a data is added automatically it will update the grid.
                sorry.

                  Gandhi, thanks for trying. Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. More thinking on it.

                  thanks
