Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using AJAX technique to fetch related child records

We've all seen the stunning videos of AJAX peformance for pulling in other parts of a single record to display sans the dreaded refresh, or doing a cascading look up, again all from a single table. (state, city, customer) in a tree for example

    BUT

Has anyone done used an AJAX technique to quickly navigate through related child records, say in a tabbed regoin for example?

I want to pull up a contact record, and in just the same way that the detail can be pre-fetched, i want to pre-fetch or just plain quickly fetch the child records when i click a control on the parent record.

the docs on this are very sparse, any help would great!

PS - BONUS question worth 10 extra points on the final : has anyone seen a "netmailer" type functionality and or application built successfully for WAS?
    cheers

Re: Using AJAX technique to fetch related child records

The pieces are all there you just have to put them together - I have successfully written an AJAX file archive system that pulls info out of a variety of files and folder structures, and I have successfully written a "grid" style display of the latest X entries in an Oracle table.... (If you search my past posts there is one in an AJAX-related thread where I posted source code for that)

But I haven't done the child record retrieval yet & at the moment am too busy and have worked too hard to just hand out the code to others... (Especially since it would require re-working the code to remove confidential info etc!)

Sure it's possible though... at least for passively displaying the info (for editing the info, it's a bit trickier cos it won't be a grid with full grid functionality).

You can access most Netmailer functions from WAS as far as I am aware :)

Re: Using AJAX technique to fetch related child records

PS: I also just adapted the "Web Users" components and pages from the WAS Samples that ship with A5 to work with AJAX... not done a lot of testing but seems to work as expected.... will post code when I get a minute, you should be able to adapt this to work with child records.

Check out the new WAS Sample App that can be downloaded with the latest V9 Patch: http://www.charlesworth.biz/WAS/AJAX_Grid.a5w

What pops up when you click on the detail view link is what you need :)
