Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    dual monitors - lockup problem

I am putting this out to anyone using a dual monitor system. I have a problem whereby Alpha will freeze on a somewhat random basis, but always as a result of interplay between my two monitors. Here is an example: Alpha in the right-most monitor, Outlook in the left-most monitor. While working in Alpha perhaps on a Grid or Dialog, I check my messages in Outlook. Then, on return to the right-most monitor, Alpha is frozen. I have to force abort the program.

Any one else with duals seeing this problem?

(I put this question in V9 App Server since that is the program I am using most often. It also happens when using V8.)

Do you have XP Service pack 3 installed? I had a similar problem recently until I disabled the nVidia multi-desktop feature, and was never sure if the problem was with Alpha5 or with SP3...

Yes, it happens several times a day to me also. Yesterday, I had to close and restart Alpha about 5 times. I have V9, dual monitors and Vista Ultimate with nVidia video.

The cause is the same. I have one monitor with Alpha (windowed, not full screen) with the web control panel and a component open, and I'll be testing the results in a browser on the other monitor. When I return the cursor to Alpha, the screens in the body of Alpha are frozen.

Just the windows inside Alpha are frozen. I can still access the window bar. Clicking "Control Panel" for example, highlights the tab, but has no affect on the visible windows. I can also click the top menu buttons to close the application, but again, no response from the windows in the body of Alpha.

Yep, same symptoms. I'll check nVidia forum to see if others report solutions. MS snuck in a SP3, didn't know about that.

Yes, installed it on an old PC where it caused some problems, then tried to avoid installing it only for it to sneak it past me after I got my new PC and IT hadn't disabled auto-updates!

Apparently SP3 caused lots of problems with HP PCs with AMD processors (because the PCs had an image of Windows pre-installed with both AMD and Intel drivers, and the update installed the wrong drivers as a result), but aside from that I haven't heard anything about this - in my case disabling the nVidia bumf stopped the problem but obviously if you actually need to use dual monitors that's no good!

Steve, I'm curious about your setup. Are you using one video card to support the two monitors? I ask because I use two video cards to do this and have never had the problem you're experiencing.

There seem to be a fair amount of folk who have trouble with different apps when using nView Desktop manager: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...+freeze+&meta=

It must be something in the DHTML or other modules Alpha5 uses that sets it off - others have the same problems with Delphi and various Adobe products with nVidia drivers: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion...hp?t36879.html

I am glad Steve brought this dual monitor issue up.

I have a dual monitor system off one video card, WinXP Pro SP2 and with A5V8 WAS development the A5 windows will randomly freeze. It seems the A5 top level menu dropdown will still work. I don't recall noticing this issue with desktop development or when running a desktop application.

My solution, which seems to work consistently, it to go to the top level menu Help -> Check for new verision...and A5 windows are active again. Other top level dropdown menus may also work as well.

Re: dual monitors - lockup problem

So far, I've found lots of conversation about this problem on other forums. So it is not specific to Alpha. Suggestions were vague; reduce the resolution to decrease load on graphic card, update the driver (which I did), get a newer card, etc. Nothing concrete. I did update my drivers and it's a brand new computer with a high-grade graphics card with lots of memory. So I will keep watching. There must be some debugging tools out there to capture what happens at the exact moment it locks up.

I updated my nVidia drivers and have not had this lockup after about 15 hours straight work. I think it is fixed. I did not patch Windows to SP3.

In my case, its for NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI and the driver is version 169.96, 05/26/2008 (very recent!)

Re: dual monitors - lockup problem

Steve, thanks for the heads up on the new driver. I installed it (I've only got the lowly 7300LE, but it also had a driver dated May 08).

My operating system is the Vista Ultimate Disaster SP1, and, so far, the new driver doesn't seem to have broken anything.

I'll post the operating result later today.

Thanks I will try that too - I don't actually use two monitors, but remote-desktopping into my work PC from a widescreen laptop seems to invoke dual desktop functionality, hence my having experienced the same problem...

FYI I use dual monitors and could not be without it

I too have found NVIDIA drivers to be a bit flaky over the years

One point that still needs addressing re dual monitors is that Alpha will open dialogs and menus menus in the alternate displays. I reported this as a bug 12-18 months ago. Other applications seem to work fine.

This generally forces me to have Alpha in the left hand display since having in right hand display opens file menu etc on the left display. The same applies in reverse to the application server menu from task bar which will open on the right hand display.

Mike - I remember having that window problem, and then fixing it with a proper nVidia setting. They changed the latest driver to not show that setting, but it was something like 'open dialogs/windows in the same window as the application.'
