Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • File exists, Choose a different file. Blank Web Apps Control Page

    Rich Harnett wrote:
I can open up the .adb application just fine, but when I go to the Web Projects tab, none of the components or .a5w pages show up, even though they are present in the webprojects folder. I've tried using the "add file" option to add them back into the web projects panel, but I get a message saying the they already exist, and to choose a different file. (I have the same problem trying to develop local apps and store them on my personal network directory (J:))

    Steve Wood replied:
Try this. Make a backup copy of all of your applications folders and files because I am going to suggest you delete folders below. Then:
    • In your live location, delete the web projects folder and its subfolders.
    • Open your db and go to your web projects tab. This will create a brand new mydb.webprojects folder with a subfolder named default.webproject.
    • Then copy all of your web project files in to the default.webproject folder.
I tried this and found that the “create a brand new mydb.webprojects folder” didn’t happen. I still need to create a new web project and add a5w pages and other components manually every time I come back to my app. I still can’t go back to where I left off while developing a web app.
Steve Workings said in our seminar today that AlphaSports had everything in one place with data in the AlphaSports directory with an AlphSports.WebProjects below that. On my system, which is the most recent build as of this morning, AlphaSports data is found in
    C:\Program Files\A5V9\Samples\AlphaSports
and the web projects are found in
    C:\Program Files\A5V9\Samples\WebAppServerDemo\Web_Applications_Demo.WebProjects\Default.WebProject
If I open AlphaSports as a database, the click on “Web Projects”, I get nothing. Just like all the rest of my projects. All a5w pages and components have to be added manually. What’s wrong? This part of the database structure/web app development is driving me nuts!!!

AlphaSports does not contain any a web project, components or web pages. It is a desktop version only. There is also AlphaSportsWeb (this is an item you must purchase)

You will find web components, pages etc in the Web_Applications_Demo database if you open the web projects control panel. Each adb file (database) can contain Desktop, Web or a comobo of the two.

    Hope that helps.

I was using AlphaSports as an example. I still have a blank Web Projects Control Panel even after I build something and save it within the same database. I just can't come back in and resume development without starting a new project and adding in what I already developed manually.

I do not see a problem here. Perhaps you could create a new simple database with a web project and post it? I just added pages, close the database and all was there when I re-openend it.

Problem solved. Remove ALL old copies of A5 (I had versions 7 through 9), then ALL data directories (put in backup). Clean the registry and reinstall A5V9 and today's patch (most current). Done. Even AlphaSports comes up the way it did in the seminar today. Whew! this has been a frustrating two weeks.
