Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    installation/setup of web server application

I have been a user of Alpha since version 3 discovery edition. i have alot of experience with desktop application programming. however, i am moving into the world of the internet (dragged in clawing and screaming is more like it).

I purchased the package that had v9 along with the web application server, the e-commerce package, and th e-book about programming web applications. i got v9 installed, and i thingk the e-commerce package is installed so i can look at it and make my modifications to it. however, i am at a loss as to how to set up the web application server, and how this works with my website.

currently my website is hosted on a remote server. it is a linux server, and my pages and graphics are stored there. but the site needs to be completely revamped to put database's into it. hence the purchase of the e-commerce package. figured it would save me alot of time in the long run.

sales told me that the web server app would run on my server at home. and the webpages of my site, would be run from the linux server. but in the class this morning, it sounds as though it is all designed to be run from the remote server, or from my server, but both on the same machine. am i missing something here?

    Chuck -

You don't have to have a remote server. Any server that will serve web pages will do the job, including your server at home.

The examples I used in class were aimed at the majority of the attendees, which I presume will, one way or another, use a remote server.

Keep in mind that the A5 Web Server is built for the Windows environment. One way you could manage this is serve the A5 pages on your home server and let your other pages be served in the Linux machine, though I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't just move everything to your local, home server.

    That help?

Re: installation/setup of web server application

thank you for that info. however, the reason i do wish to continue to keep my website on a remote server, is cause my server at home is tasked with another task, and it sucks up most of my bandwidth doing that. as i am constantly running a mass emailing campaign, and i have an a5v7 app that is sending out approximately 3,000,000 emails a month. and that concerns me as to handling the website itself, on top of the mailings.

Re: installation/setup of web server application

You can split 'em. I have a couple customers that do that already. Most of their pages are on their legacy site, but they wanted to extend their app with some A5 stuff.

So, their "regular" URL is something like "MySite.com", and they link pages to my server for processing, with a different URL such as "Secure.MySite.com" for a consistent flow. Then, when I'm done with things, I send the user back to whatever my customer specifies at the legacy site.

Re: installation/setup of web server application

Me too I woul dlike to setup my web server A5 v9, but I do not feel secure about the operating system (Windows XP Pro, not server) ( I am talking about things such as back doors, open doors, close any way an hacker could use to enter the webserver.

So, I am trying to see if I need to run Windows on either:

            1) OpenBSD with a Windows API implementation
(maybe API available is not fully working)
            2) FreeBSD with a Windows API implementation
            3) VNWare (more like an emulator, or need to install Win Xp on it?)
            4) Apple Server (Max OS os based on FreeBSD)
            with a Windows API implementation
            5) Windows as is but with some necessary guidelines to secure the OS
            6) Window protected with a firewall on another CPU.
            7) Other solution

So, I am asking to those who know a lot about security:

            1) What makes a Windows XP a secure webserver?
            2) Does it really add more security to put data on another CPU?

            Thanks
            Marc

Re: installation/setup of web server application

Not a security expert, but I doubt that any of those are more secure than the other, just more complicated to set up. My list is:

              - firewall to restrict access to unauthorized ports
              - virus and spyware protection
              - proper lockdown in terms of FTP and other remote access
              - Alpha Five data source placed outside of document root
              - Automatic Windows updates
              - Method to monitor my server and watch for threats

The Data on another CPU can add or decrease security --
              - PRO: Supposedly that other CPU will not have Internet/FTP access
              - CON: Now you have two machines involved and have to make sure they are both secure
              - Its also more difficult to Publish your project to the server, you'd have to use manual FTP for your data, not Alpha's built-in publishing.

Re: installation/setup of web server application

If you want to split but keep things one machine there a free solution called ESXI from VMWARE its like vmwarestation but it can handle things in a more efficient way specialy with more cpu. The footprint is 32MB. Not difficult to install. But you still need the other stuff what Steve advised like firefill etc.

                cheers Eric
