Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Path to web alias

I am having a problem with my web alias. This is where my files are:
    C:\Users\Pat\OCECDWebData.adb

I am using Windows VISA and sometimes the way it handles files is confusing to me. The really nice guy from my web hosting says my alias should be c:\a5v9\A5Webroot. I have read all the help files and posting on web aliases and right now (after working on this all night) I am so confused!! Please help someone.

    Re: Path to web alias

Your alias should point to where the data files reside, C:\Users\Pat\ in your case. You should never place your data under a5webroot (document root) and not point your alias there. The purpose of the alias is specifically to support NOT putting your data under the document root.

      Re: Path to web alias

      Steve,

Thank you for your response. I did what you said and re-published everything, but I'm still getting these messages "Error 3 - Error loading [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Publications.dbf: The system cannot find the path specified. \[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Publications.dbf" and "Error 3 - Error loading c:\a5v9\A5Webroot\trainings data.dbf: The system cannot find the file specified. c:\a5v9\A5Webroot\trainings data.dbf"

Most of my pages have 3 web components - 1 to add records, 1 to update/edit records and another to show totals. I had things working before, but then I had a computer crash and had to re-do everything, because (duh) I hadn't backed up. I truly don't know what I have done wrong. I'm sure it's only one setting, but I'll be darned if I can find it!

Go to View > Settings > Preferences > Web Publishing > Alias Resolution and change the option to "Publish Time". Save and republish.

Not sure how well it is documented because I haven't looked, but Alpha made a change in that area recently. It defaults to resove that alias [PathAlias.ADB_Path] at runtime, meaning you would need to set the value on the server - and I'm not quite there myself.

          Re: Path to web alias

Well, I got a few of the components, but still more with the dreaded message "Error 3 - Error loading C:\Users\Pat\\Office Staff.dbf: The system cannot find the path specified. C:\Users\Pat\\Office Staff.dbf"

This is very frustrating. Any more ideas???

            Re: Path to web alias

            C:\Users\Pat\\Office Staff.dbf

has a space between Office and Staff. Never name anything with an embedded space or special charactor.

and there are two backslashes between Pat and Office.

Work that out and it will be fine.

<sigh> Same old, same old. No change at all. There has to be something I've done wrong. Do you have any other ideas? I'll try anything. Well, almost. BTW, it worked when I was publishing to Local when I was working on it. Does that mean anything?

                  Re: Path to web alias

Thanks for all your help. You have saved my job, I'm sure. I would have been sitting here with no hair or finger nails without you and I STILL wouldn't have a working data base. I thank you, my boss thanks you, etc.

I think Alpha 5 needs an "Alpha5 for Dummies" book with at least 3 chapters on aliases for people like me. :)

                    Re: Path to web alias

Hey, sorry to bring up such an old post but I was just searching for a solution to a problem I'm having and this is the most relevant post I've found. The issue concerns Application Server Version 10.

When trying to print reports from a tabbedUI page I'm getting the following error:
Report did not print because the Data Dictionary that contains the Report definition was not found.
                    Missing Data Dictionary: [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\sql_expdetails.ddd
This all worked fine when publishing to the Local Webroot, but the error pops when published to the server.
I'm really not sure what's going on with the aliases. I have 3 reports in total at the moment and 2 were given alises when selected in the Report Print Genie.

                    Here's what they look like:
                    "Expenses@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\sql_expdetails.ddd"

Is it a case of declaring these aliases somewhere?

I mentioned this in another post recently. It might be best to continue this there
                    Thanks!
