Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Recommendations for Page Titles ...

What considerations are there for page titles?

Should the title be the same for every page of an application? If so, is there a tool to change the title on several hundred pages at once?

If not, then what guide lines are there?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions ...

Re: Recommendations for Page Titles ...

I'm not an SEO expert, but I expect if those pages are not important for ranking those pages in search engines, then they can all be the same name. Since A5W pages are just text, you could use an off-the-shelf search-replace utility to find all <title></title> tags and replace them with what you want. If you do this, be sure to BACKUP and also to first move all A5W pages to a separate directory to perform the replace. That's because the search-replace tool will mistake all .a5wcmp files as also .a5w files.

Thanks Steve - I suspected as much. It seems that one consistent title would give the user a greater sense that they are in a cohesive application. And as far as SEO goes, I would think that individual pages of the application would not be what we would want ranked anyway.

      Thanks ...

          Gary

          I would make them unique.
The quote below is directly from the Google Search Engine Optimization Guide.

          Create unique, accurate page titles
A title tag tells both users and search engines what the topic of a particular page is. The <title> tag
should be placed within the <head> tag of the HTML document. Ideally, you should create a unique
title for each page on your site.

          Jeff

Re: Recommendations for Page Titles ...

If you want to make your titles unique but not have to manually enter on each page, I use this expression to pull in a title from a table.

            <title><%a5 ?lookupc("F",a5_split_url(request.script_name).page,"Title","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\web_content","Page") %></title>

The a5_split part basically says 'what is the name of this page' and then looks up that page name in the table, grabs the title. I'd probably want to add a default to this expression in case I have a page not recorded in the table.

Just got to thinking about this some more....I thought I would attach the Official Google SEO Starter Guide.

As a side note...one method you can employ if you want to get nearly instant(well a few days really)great rankings in Google....write a press release and release it at a place like PRWeb. In just a few days, you can have A LOT OF news aggregator sites pointing to your site from the recently released press release they now have on their site and that figures greatly in Googles rankings. Plus, you can choose the industries / outlets where you want your press release to go so you might just get some business too. I recently did this for a customer with great results. They released a new product and it got tradename recognition in Google in just a few days. They also got some orders just from the press release. A win-win for sure. It is not free to send these press releases(they have 3 different levels of distribution) but I have done these several times now with success.

                Gary,
Unsure how correct this is, by it may be worth some thought,
When a search engine visits a website, yes it checks the Title, however it then will also check the title for relevance to the page.
Thus if in mormal Meta tags, and <H> type tags relate to the Title, the relevance is better assured. Of course different search engines behave differently and have different rules. But the essence is that a search engine loves to correctly classify a web page, this naturally means it can serve up the most relevant result for a query, So it pays to make it easy for the search engines.

Page titles to me are very important! As you can see I use Google Webmaster tools among the many. I currently have 177 pages with duplicated META tags. This is actually good compared to a few weeks ago.

To make many of my pages "unique" I have the example code (see pic) in them. This works real slick and Google finds them easily. I'm typically located on the first search page and towards the top.

Site mapping also very important. I believe Steve Wood commented on this in several threads.
