Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Window kill

    I have a form with a link field that call a dialog on a new window. How can i kill the window if a variable passed is blank. I know how to test for the variable but all the commands that i put on the initialize section did not work.

    Re: Window kill

    Javascript seems the obvious answer... although perhaps not even opening the window if the variable isn't set might be a better plan?

      Thanks Andrea, you are correct not opening the window was my first idea but i couldn't find "show/hide" for a link. Is there other field to do that?

        Custom Controls are useful for that... :)

          if this is a grid, create a calculated field and add it as a link field:

          IF that var is not blank then
          the url
          else
          blank
          end if

              Andrea, Steve:
              I'm working on a grid and using MySql. I created the field to link on the select statement (" " as LinkUpload). I grabbed that field and made a link. I used address type as Calculated from other fields on the grid, which makes sense (I want to go to the link if Grower is "") but the Link Address section does not allow me to add any kind of code.
              I probably missing something, where do you suggest i enter the code for testing the blank field?

              Sorry for bothering you, i'm new but learning fast.

                Re: Window kill

                I wasn't too clear. Here is an example.

                Calculated field expression:

                myurl = if(Regstatus="ACTIVE","http://www.sqst.com","")

                Add field as a link. Display Vaue in Field. Field Value is Link Address.

                So if my field named regstatus is the word "ACTIVE", the URL will show as a link. If not, no link will show at all. See attached image.

                  Re: Window kill

                  Steve, I think the sample you sent is based on Alpha database. I'm using MySql and as far as I know I can't up IF statments on the sql builder (as soon as say OK strips the IFs and THENs out) The other problem is i need to send two parameters when I call the new page.
                  Do you think this is possible, may be will be easier to try to kill the new window if the parameters are empty.

                  Thanks again

                    Re: Window kill

                    Don't know about sql. Causing the window to just close is bad form. Better if you add xbasic on the target page that causes all components to disappear, and a simple message appear saying "Nothing to do, click here to return to xyz".

                    Making the components disappear and replaced with a message is easy.

                    You put xbasic above the first component that says:

                    Code:
                    IF the parameters are blank THEN
                    display this text and a link back to the previous page
                    ELSE
                    Then below the last component, put an xbasic block with simply:

                    Code:
                    END IF
                    That is, it's OK to break up the xbasic in to two blocks of code like this.

                      That is clever. It is simple.

                        Re: Window kill

                        You would never be able to effectively accomplish the kill window concept anyway. Browsers don't work the same way, and don't allow you to just close a window without some fussing with the differences between browsers.

                          You can't format calc fields in mySQL grids the same as DBF grids...

                          Which is why I (admittedly because I didn't think of the fact you can define calc fields in DBF grids!) suggested a custom control...

                          I found them hugely confuddling at first but now rely on them a lot - you'd put this in the definition (replace the names of the fields as needed):

                          Code:
                          Dim HasVal as c
                          HasVal = Data.VALCHECKFIELD

                          'Write Xbasic code here that returns the HTML to be displayed by this control
                          If HasVal = "" then
                              LINKFIELD_NAME_render = ""
                          Else
                              LINKFIELD_NAME_render = "<a target='_new' href='test.aw?value="+HasVal+"'>Click here</a>"
                          end if
