Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Self Hosting

I have been trying to host my web application on my computer by following the instructions provided. Everything is in order except that it doesn't work. When I put in my external IP address my verizon FiOS router log on screen comes up. When I put in my external IP address with the :8080/ I still get the FiOS router log on screen. I have spent about an hour with a Verizon tech and he says that Verizon uses port 8080 but that should not inhibit my using it as well. We stepped through it together and the tech says I am set up correctly. The Alpha was and the firewall are set up correctly yet I can't get my page to display. Anyone have any thoughts?

        Re: Self Hosting

Your router uses :8080 as it's own internal port. If you NEED to use this port, you might be able to change the router's port. This would most likely be done on the router's TOOLS page.

If you can use a different port for your Alpha application, you change the port on the alpha server's control panel.

If you do decide to use a different port for your alpha application, you must set up 'Port Forwarding' on your router also. On your router this might be called 'Virtual Server' or 'Custom Virtual Server'. You must then enter your server's IP address and the port you used for your alpha application.

If you need any further assistance, do not hesitate to ask. I have been hosting Alpha apps (and other apps) for awhile now and it has worked out flawlessly.

Thanks for the replies. I will change the port to 8888 as suggested by 411 tech. I'll see if that works. I am only trying the self host option for a short time. Customers will be hosted by alpha 5 hosters.

OK here is an update 7/23/08 4:25pm - I made all the changes for port 8888. I am now getting a page cannot be displayed error. At least it's different. I believe the problem is the protocol. The Verizon router has a selection for a protocol from a drop down box and there must be over 200 selections none of which are familiar to me. Does anybody know what protocol we should be using. There are no references to protocol in the instructions except for the TCP selection in the set up process, but the Verizon router is strange. So I think the hang up has to do with the protocol. Any ideas?

I havent see the Verizon router, but it should be a place to map a call from the outside to a specific computer in the intranet.
I have two routers in one of them this funciotion is called virtual server and in the other services. You tell the router to listen for a port and redirect the call to a ip address on the intranet.

              I hope this helps

Thanks for the note. I believe the hang up is in the protocol. The mapping is easy and straight forward but it doesn't work. The only place I have found that could be in error is in a box that is required which is a drop down menu with over 200 selections for a protocol. You can pass the selection. You must make a selection but most of them are greek to me. My was is set up. My firewall is set up and the router is set up and check by a verizon tech who says it is correct. I still get a page can not be displayed error. The only thing left is that protocol requirement.

PS This is a fiber optic network provided by verizon and the router seems to be much different that the Linksys router that I am familiar with.

There are named protocols? such as POP3, SMTP, etc?

It should be a place to create your onw protocol name, some routers work that way.

                    Hello Dan:

I solved it. I got Verizon to patch me to "Action Tech" ( they are the manufacturers of the router ) and we deleted the port forwarding rule and put in the same info and it worked. That's one thing I didn't think of.

                        Re: Self Hosting

That is a useful tip for anyone selfhosting. Many times I have encountered this error where a particular port forward which has worked for months or years stops working.

Of course the first thing we think of is that the application is at fault. I have spent hours debugging only to find out the router has stopped forwarding the port.

So now the first step in my troubleshooting is to first delete the port forward in the router and then put it back. You wouldn't believe how many times just doing this fixes the issue.

If you are supporting many clients (Hopefully!) you do NOT have to be onsite to perform this function. As long as you know the remote site's WAN IP address, you can log directly into the router bypassing VNC, Teamviewer or Radmin remote client software.

                        ie. http://client-WAN-IP:8080 or
                        http://client-WAN-IP:88 or
http://client-WAN-IP:8888 depending on what is set up in the router. Then log into the router and go to the port forwarding page and then delete and reenter the settings.
