Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: JavaScript

    I just googled a couple phrases like "javascript count options" and came up with a lot of good ideas. Do you have something you've tried and you're stuck?

    It would probably help us answer you if we have a bit of context. Do you need to show or use the quantity somewhere somehow?

    Another thought that occurs to me, if you can, is to use a table for the source of the options. Then you can use familiar A5 tools to get a record or query count. Again, context, context, context...

      Re: JavaScript

      Yes i tried some code and stucked up there.
      i have a multi select dropdownlist with list of cutomers.once the selection is done , in a text box i wanted to display how many items selected.

      I can do this with alpha 'Dump' and 'count' method, but i cant use that because i need to display the selected items count once the selections are done,hence alpha dont have dropdown 'on select' event or textbox ' on focus ' event , i have no choice other than using java script i guess...

      this is the code i wrote in a5w page...

      <script>
      window.onload = init;
      function init()
      {

      var selcust = document.getElementById("txtcustno");
      selcust.onfocus = countselected

      }

      function countselected()
      {

      alert("function called...")
      var selOpts = document.getElementById("customer").options.length;
      alert(selOpts)
      }

      im always gettin error message as 'object reqired' afetr alerting "function called"...

      instead of dropdow i tested wth textbox

      var selOpts = document.getElementById("txtname").value;
      alert(selOpts)

      this code displayin the name in txtname correctly...
      so i feel the problem is on my dropdown syntax...

      could anyone help to corrct my syntax?
      Or anyother better way to count the selected items?
      Thanks & Regards,
      RR

        Re: JavaScript

        I think the problem is that you are try to bind functions to events before they have been created - move the functions to a position in the code before the "window.onload = init".

        Alternatively, if you have the "core.js" file linked to the page, you might try:

        Code:
        $e.add('customer','change',function(){
        	var selNum = this.options.length;
        	$svs('txtcustno',''+selNum)
        });
        I haven't actually tried this on my end, but I think it is what you want.

          Re: JavaScript

          Thanks eavan,

          but the functions will be called only if the events occurs rite? so i dont find any reason to move my code before window.init() thats y i left it after init()...

          add('customer','change',function(){
          var selNum = this.options.length;
          $svs('txtcustno',''+selNum)
          });

          Does the js will understand if i jus mention add('customer','change.....)?
          Thanks & Regards,

            Yes I got it.
            i have looked at the actual source output in html view,there my control name customer is replaced with Hrmis_BUSINESST_customer

            i used the below code to get it done...
            function countselected()
            {
            var count = 0;
            var MyCust = document.getElementById("Hrmis_BUSINESST_customer")
            var selOpts = MyCust.options.length;
            for(var i = selOpts - 1; i >= 0; i--) {
            if ((MyCust.options[i]!= null) && (MyCust.options[i].selected == true))
            {count = count + 1 }}
            document.getElementById("txtcustno").value = count;
            }
            Thanks & Regards,
