Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Quotation marks being displayed wrong

Never had this problem before, but suddenly today, when a user types text into a memo field and hits sumbit, some of the characters are changed once they are saved into the table. For example, below is a paragraph from a police report, and this is how it is displayed on the web page:

A-1 WAS POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS THE INDIVIDUAL WHO GRABBED THE ACER LAPTOP COMPUTER FROM THE DESK OF V-1 EARLIER TODAY. THIS OFFICER INTERVIEWED BOTH V-1 AND W-1 AS TO THEIR CERTAINTY A-1 WAS THE SAME INDIVIDUAL THAT STOLE THE ACER LAPTOP COMPUTER, BOTH V-1 AND W-1 ADVISED THIS OFFICER THAT THEY CHASED A-1 FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO THE LOCATION WHERE THIS OFFICER MADE THE APPREHENSION, WITH W-1 NEVER LOSING SIGHT OF A-1. ALL EVENTS OCCURRED IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MARYLAND.

This is how it is saved in the table's memo pad:

“A-1” WAS POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS THE INDIVIDUAL WHO GRABBED THE ACER LAPTOP COMPUTER FROM THE DESK OF “V-1” EARLIER TODAY. THIS OFFICER INTERVIEWED BOTH “V-1” AND “W-1” AS TO THEIR CERTAINTY “A-1” WAS THE SAME INDIVIDUAL THAT STOLE THE ACER LAPTOP COMPUTER, BOTH “V-1” AND “W-1” ADVISED THIS OFFICER THAT THEY CHASED “A-1” FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO THE LOCATION WHERE THIS OFFICER MADE THE APPREHENSION, WITH “W-1” NEVER LOSING SIGHT OF “A-1.” ALL EVENTS OCCURRED IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MARYLAND.

This is of course, also how it prints out on the report. Apparently the grid is not translating the apostrophe and quotation symbols correctly, and substituting the jibberish instead.

Have you recently played with what is in the header or between the head tags of any page in your appliation. Specifically a line that might look similar to this:

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

Also, are they typing this text directly in the Grid, or cut-paste from something like Word? Thinking of 'smart quotes' and such.

No Steve I haven't touched the application in quite a while, and officers enter data into it several times a day with no problems. I did some further investigation and found that in this particular instance, the officer DID copy the narrative from a wordpad (txt) document, but they do that all the time and haven't had any problems in the past, and they use quotation marks extensively.

This is very weird however, because if I type "A-1" in manually it will always (so far) come out okay, and sometimes if I copy it from a text document it will come out okay, but almost always, if I copy a whole paragraph, anything with quotation marks or apostrophes will be messed up.

It gets better - I cleared the memo pad which contained the whole narrative (not just one paragraph) from the report in question, saved it, then pasted the text back in. It was still messed up. I then went through the entire narrative and removed all the quotation and apostrophe marks, and saved it. Of course it was clean. Then I went back and added the quotation and apostrophe marks from where I had removed them, saved it again, and this time everything came out correctly. I did this several times, and it works every time, so now I'm even more confused, because it seems like it works *sometimes,* but not all the time.

Can you track this down to a specific machine doing the entry?

Is someone using the system on a Mac?

I'm sure if you look at the "good" quotation marks and the "bad" ones, they will be different ASCII characters. WordPad is a wordk processor, NOT a text editor. You can get funky symbols when you copy-paste. Notepad is a pure text editor.

Hi Al, no it's not just one machine. I tested it at home, and again on a different machine here at work and have the same results.

Steve, interesting comment about wordpad and notepad. When I get a minute here, I'll try some tests in both to see if that's the problem.

It's just strange that I haven't seen this before. My guys have been using my new RMS for about three months now, and they paste narratives into the memo pad section all the time, yet this is the first time I've encountered a problem with characters.

Often times they extract a large narrative from an arrest report completed at the local jail facility, stick it on a thumb drive in a word / note pad, and copy it into the Narrative Section of my RMS. And as I said, we haven't have a problem since day one, although I can't say with any level of certainty whether they are using Wordpad or Notepad to carry the data back. I'll do some further research and see what I find out.

Rich, I don't remember very well but i think word and wordpad uses a thing call "smart quotes" which changes the direction and counts (so it can put a close quote) quotes. Somewere is a setup in wordpad and word to use or not smart quotes.
              I hope this helps
