Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Live Preview of grid builder - filter not functioning

Just getting started with V9 web projects and thought that when I did a live preview, the filter that I added "Job_Number=VAR->ASKC_JOB_NUMBER" to the grid would sort the records by job. I do not get any request for the job number and do not get any records showing up.

Should the "Browser" live preview prompt for the filter and provide the filtered records?
I am able to enter new records in the "Browser" live preview and these show up on the Browser and therefore have been added to the database.

Searched the help files for "live preview" came up with the following however I can not find the lightening bolt icon it mentions.

Previewing the Grid in the Live Preview Directory

    1. Click "lightening bolt" on the toolbar to preview the page in the Live Preview directory. This is different from viewing the grid on the Live Preview tab. In this case the Application Server processes any Xbasic on the page and your browser displays the results. The important difference from previewing in your local webroot is that files previewed to the Live Preview directory can not be seen by web users.

ASKC_ is a desktop feature. That method will not work on the web. To do what you want you either need to use the Search option on a Grid or create Dialog that askes for input, and then opens a Grid on Submit. That later method is more difficult.

Steve, I was going through the steps of setting up a grid and the function was there as part of the filter setup using the genie.

So if it is not available, then I guess it should be removed. I will have to do a bit more reading and research to get a search function happening.

      Thanks

I believe you, but I don't see where that option would come up in setting a grid filter. Can you show?

What I am trying to do is a little project for work where the site superintendent can log into our database to check status of ordered equipment.

So my thought was that the askc command would let him input his job number to see the status of equipment for that particular job.

Likely the easiest way is to create that same Grid and add a Search section to it. The Sup can log in, the use Search to find the Job and see status.

larry, if you are confident that the end user knows the job number exactly..

just create an a5w page with a text box and submit button and a grid with filter option where the filter of "job number" gets the value from a variable..
whether it is a page variable or session..

once the user enters the job number and press "view" or "submit" button, u assign this text box value to the variable that u defined in your grid for filtering..
internally u check whether there is a record existing with that job number, if yes, then display the grid .. if not, don't display the grid.. for the grid, u don't need to do any additional coding as it is already receiving the filter value from the "textbox" value as a variable..

Good point, if they may not know the job number, making the search field a dropdown box might be more useful.

The "QuickSearch" option in grids is also useful for fast and yet compact (size-wise) search boxes: http://afas.alphasoftware.com/Sample...earch_page.a5w
