How do I variable from url

I want to get the value in name. In this case "tommy".

Depends entirely on where you are when you want to generate the URL. In a Grid, on an A5W page, etc. In a grid you create a Link field and Calc from other Fields, and the Genie walks you through adding a Variable. In a dialog or on an A5W page you use standard xbasic to construct your URL.

I would like to get the value when I open a .a5w page. The page is opened with a response.redirect. The value is appended to the url statement as ?name = foo. That part is easy and works just fine.

The part I can't seem to get is how to retrieve that value (foo) when the page that has been redirected to opens.

I know this must be really simple but for some reason I'm having a senior moment I guess.

That's easy too. In the target A5W page "name" becomes a page variable:

URL: ...?name=foo

A5W page:

if eval_valid("name")
?name
...whatever else you want to do with 'name'
end if

I hate to bother folks with these trivial questions and I always search the documentation and forum first. I must say I find most of my answers here. As a matter of fact, I've found info here that I never could find in the docs!

Almost anything that is not brand new to V9 is documented in the online help files, but it may not be indexed under the terms you are looking for (because sometimes it takes a human being to interpret a question! :) ).
