Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to Question: Logical Check Boxes

Placing logical check boxes on my dialog, which are meant to be true if checked, false of not, I found that, in an event program, you can not just ask:

"if checkbox = .T. then" or "if checkbox then"

    You must ask:

    "if checkbox = "True" then"

    QUESTIONS:
What are the rules for testing logical variables? I couldn't find it in the "Help" files.

What are the characteristics and uses of each of the control types? I couldn't find a list in "Help"

    Thanx

Remember that everything on an HTML page is character-type.

So, logical fields are "True" or "False"

What may appear to be numeric fields are also character-type, so remember to treat them that way.

Re: How to Question: Logical Check Boxes

I've just come across something with my checkbox setup in the dialog I created. All of the fields that I set up as a check box are logical fields.

When I press submit and it appends the data to my table, it puts a "T" in all of the fields although the initial value is set to false on the controls.

I don't have anything special set in my after validate section or on the control. I thought it was supposed to put a 'T' if it was checked and an 'F' if it wasn't automatically but I guess not. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: How to Question: Logical Check Boxes

I gave up on check boxes and changed all my logical fields to "character" radio buttons that say "Yes" or "No". I also felt that, from a user's point of view, it was clearer to answer a question either "Yes" or "No".

I can display the answer, without converting it, and I can look for "Yes" or "No" in the event code. Answers that I don't intend to display store only "Y" or "N" in the field. You do all this in the "Choices" option of the dialog builder for the field.

Re: How to Question: Logical Check Boxes

I really don't want to change them unless it's absolutely necessary.

I've looked through the help section, but I don't see anything that talks about this specifically and I don't see it in the xbasic info either.

          Any thoughts?

The grid works fine. I'm using a dialog component though so every little thing has to be programmed it looks like.

I am new to alpha and I agree there is lot of details to take care of.
I guest it is the price for so much control available to us.
The reason I mention that article is beacuse it descrives about logical checkboxes.
                Have fun, Mike

Re: How to Question: Logical Check Boxes

I found this in Help > search > logical checkbox:

"Note : Logical values are represented by the values "True" and "False". For example, if you wanted to use "Yes" and "No", you could have these entries in the list:

                  Yes|True
                  No|False"

You should check the choices that are set for each of your checkboxes.
