Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I find and open a Web Project?

If a Web Project has no .alb file, it seems to be impossible to navigate to it and open it, in Alpha5, if it is not in the default Web Projects folder.

How do I find Web projects, with no .alb files, in other locations/volumes? I want to copy my project to a CD, and bring it to another computer, to demo it.

If you want to demo it INSIDE of the alpha development environment, that is, show the programming, it needs to be intact including the adb files, etc. If you just want to show it as a web application you either need to do exactly as above (run inside of Alpha Five) or publish it to a server with the Application Server running. That is, the web app will not run without either a development copy of Alpha (running as localhost) or a full copy of the Application Server. Short answer, you cannot copy it to a CD for demo purposes without also deploying one of those licensed Alpha products.

I thought the only way to create a web project is to have a database and therefore .adb file?

I believe you can add projects to a new/dummy database by first setting up a project of the same name in the target database, then copying the contents of projectname.WebProject into the projectname.WebProject folder generated when setting up the project.

However, if any of the web project tables are based on DBF tables then you obviously need the WHOLE database and not just the web project anyway!

        Steve:

        Let me clarify:

The client's computer has A5V9 installed. I just want to bring my Web project to that computer on a CD, publish it, demo it and not leave a copy of all the source on the client's computer, when I'm done. Can I deliver this project to the client, in a compiled form, so they can't monkey with the source, when I'm not looking? I know that Ms Access does provide this feature.

It bothers me, that I can't locate a Web project folder anywhere I want to, even on my own computer, and just navigate to it and open it for development and testing. I have two physical hard disks and a few partitions, on my computer, and I follow the practice of isolating the OS, the Application programs, and the data on separate partitions. It makes backup much easier.

I hope Selwyn and Richard are listening?

You can accomplish this by including the data and the published web application on the CD, and then ensuring the data is placed in a folder matching your original Alpha project. That is, recreate the directory structure of both the A5Webroot publish location and the A5 project, minus the items under web projects folder (where your web source is.)

Your client would have to start the web app server in their copy of Alpha, then manually enter "localhost/" and then the project folder if any, and an A5W page name.

But the better way, if you can do it, would publish their web application to a server with public access, and then hand out the URL to prospective clients.

You can probably accomplish your second wish if you play around with it, but maybe not. Your ability to write code may be hampered by moving things around. But experiment and let us know what you find. The development environment is for developing the product. Once you go live, your data and your web pages are most often in completely different areas, even different computers if you want.
