Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • table.external_record... locks table

    I am using the following to display content on a web page:

    The function seems to infrequently lock the table. They symptoms are that other pages with the same function, cannot display data and if I try to reindex the table, it says it is 'in use'.

    Does anyone know if this particular function is known to lock the table?

    I am looking at the following to replace it if I can't figure it out:

    dim tbl as p"[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\mytable",FILE_RO_SHARED)

    I cannot use lookup() because it only returns the first 1023 characters.

    Re: table.external_record... locks table

    table.external_record_content_get() is part of the code to generate a list box in action scripting. A quick test using that and the following UDF that enumerate and display open tables, forms and windows I wrote with the help of either Tom Cone or Stan Matthew, I believe, a while ago isn't demonstrating that tables are being left open. There was a problem with this function I reported as a bug a while back but that was corrected many updates ago. Unless the table is locked without being open (is this possible?).

    FUNCTION open_table_form_report AS C ( )
    'This produces an Xdialog showing all the currently open tables and forms
    'vOpenT = "ALL OPEN TABLES"
    'vOpenFW = "ALL OPEN FORMS"
    'vOpenWin = "ALL OPEN WINDOWS"
    ' generates crlf() lis of open tables and enumerates them
    	dim vOpenT as C = ""
    	dim vOTenum as N
    	vOpenT = table.enum_open()
    	vOTenum = w_count(vOpenT,crlf())+2
    ' form enumeration
    	dim shared vOpenF as C
    	lst = a5.form_enum(2)
    		vOpenF = ""
    		cnt = w_count(lst,crlf())
    		FOR i = 1 TO cnt
    			IF is_object(word(lst,i,crlf()))

    				for m = 1 to 100
    					IF is_object(word(lst,i,crlf())+alltrim(str(m-1)))
    						vOpenF = vOpenF + crlf()+word(lst,i,crlf())+alltrim(str(m-1))

      Re: table.external_record... locks table

      I've never had a problem with this, but perhaps it is the "?" function, not the external.... It might be held open by the "keep alive".

      Try loading the external... into a variable and then displaying the variable.

        I remember that advice from somewhere and see I have a combination of some with, some without.

          Converted every thing as Pat said, still locks the file. So it must be something else. I have other apps using this same methodology without problem.

          I did find a handy freeware utility called Unlocker at

          Lets you quickly spot check files to see if they are locked, and then unlock them if you want.

            Re: table.external_record... locks table

            Turned out to be a DB101 issue. I had remnants from different attempts to build this feature. Page_name was a field rule-calculated field, concatenating two fields. I also had an index named Page_Name, not on the Page_name field, but concatenating the same two fields. Looking up to a calc field is bad enough, but I think, not sure, that the table.external... function was using that index. Locked the table every time. I should know better.
