Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A few questions

Hello, I am very new to the Alpha Five V9 and hope that one of you would be able to help me with a few questions.

Our company is building a database of certain inventory items. Each item will have a determined Product ID number, sku, description, location, and notes. The sku and location are drop down menus pointing to each a separate database. Our main focus is to upload bits of inventory into this database, it does not need to keep track of quantity, as with most will be uploaded individually. Our current (and most important) goal at the time is to be able to open a form, and change the location of a particular item.

After we are satisfied with the database, we would like to upload it to either the web or our network (via web browser).

    Questions:
    1. How complicated will it be to convert this database and forms to an online application? Am I going about this wrong for it to become an online application?

    2. I have recently searched this message board looking for solutions to applying a "search line (or drop down menu) and button" to search the specific database for that record, and show it. I found this article below, but am confused because I have not found a "script editor" within the program yet. How can I access the script editor to work on custom buttons and such?

I realize that my questions are probably very novice. Any information or direction to tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    James A.

Tables work w. the WAS (obviously). WAS reports can be based upon sets. Forms, etc. only work w. the desktop. That's why you need to use grids & components w. the WAS. While it is possible to have both a combined desktop and WAS application based upon the same tables, each side requires their own unique interface. You can't simply convert forms into dialogs.

The WAS can use functions and scripts embedded in A5w pages. The normal non-WAS script editor is found in the controlpanel's "code" tab. Most WAS code you would create/access from the a5w page editor "source" tab. The WAS grid and component editors also have places to insert code.

      Re: A few questions

Oh I see. The WAS applications are different then your desktop database applications. I personally have had a small bit of experience with Microsoft Access, and started using Alpha5 similar to that, using forms, etc to control and edit the database.

I realize that I have been building it wrong. I had misunderstood that you build it, then able to convert it to a web application.

Do I have to start completely over? Or can I add to the databases that are currently created?

Thanks for your help and advice.
      Thanks!

Just work off your existing database. From the controlpanel select "web projects" from the toolbar.
