Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Handling Active-Link Table Duplicate Primary Key

    Hello,

I'm a new A5 user but have a lot of experience with Delphi.

I have a primary employee id key (EmpID) in an active-link table made up of the first 3 characters of the last name and a two digit character string, like "SMI00" for Smith. The underlying SQL Server table has the EmpID field as nchar(5).

With Delphi, if another employee with same last name was entered, my code would initially try to post "SMI00", and when unsuccessful, increment the two digit part, and then post "SMI01".

I attempted to use "On error goto" to trap for a duplicate primary key, but the server error apparently always interrupts the script, and I can't maintain control within my code.

Do any of you have any suggestions on a way to trap for a duplicate key and then update the key and try to repost?

Thanks in advance for you help, and my compliments to the Alpha team for an outstanding product in v9.

    Gordon

You wouldn't be using an active link table with a web grid in the first place - try setting up a grid based on one: you can't, because that's not what they are there for.

How unique IDs are handled depends on your database, each SQL database has different ways of assigning unique/autopincrement IDs...

Perhaps I should also have mentioned that this is in a windows desktop application, not a web application.
What I'm really looking for is to find out if there is any way to programatically handle the server error "Duplicate Primary Key" within the Alpha programming environment.

Ah I see - it was posted in the Application Server forum, maybe you can get it moved so more folk can respond :)

It depends how you set up the SQL database though, you might be able to do that side of things entirely at the database end so it doesn't matter WHERE data is entered from (Alpha desktop, Alpha web app, another form of data entry etc.)

Within Alpha5, you could set a field rule to calculate the ID field or to fire on a data entry event. Look at sql_record_get() or similar - in the field rules for the active link table, you can set up rules for caculated field values or for events like when a record is entered, saved etc.
