Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grids a problem

    Hi All,

I have been searching and searching and trying and trying different indexes, grid components (per Jerry's Knowledge see below links) etc.......But our app was fine until we got over a thousand records and it slowed to a crawl.

    I have a table with
    autoid c 6
    lotnumber c 6
    tunnel c 15
    time t 17
    usdf c 40

there are 6900 records and no matter what I have tried the grids are very slow. It takes about 50 seconds to load and that is on my machine locally.
I am using this table to try and tweak because others have 8000 records and are 2-5 minutes to load.

So after search I found this thread and have looked at everything that is mentioned here but to no evail.

      Grid Solution

After rereading the article and then testing and testing.
JERRY BRIGHTBILL - ALPHA EMPLOYEE -Speed in Web Pages

I know some of you are laughing right now.
For those that are wiser and more experienced then I this posting is for the newbies like me.

DO NOT USE DROPDOWN BOXES IN THE SEARCH AREA FOR A GRID.
The grids have to load the records for the dropdowns, thus slowing the pages down so bad 3-5 minutes for 7000+ records, that it's value to guide the users choice is out weighted by having the user enter search data even if they make a mistake. However you can use >=, <= or >, or < in the textbox to help in the search which then makes this ok.

        Nicholas,
No way is anyone laughing!! I, for one, very much appreciate your posting back as I'm sure it will be of benefit for others as well--I remember reading about dropdowns in grids slowing things down a while back but apparently did not relate it to your situation...your posting now brings this back to light and hopefully I won't make the same mistake you did when I finally create my first Web App.

        Thanks!
        Mike

          Mike,

          Let me clarify:

1-Dropdowns that are static are ok.

2-Dropdowns that are dynamic are ok if you are looking up a table with a few hundred records.

NOT OK when your dropdown is from the table your grid is showing and it has thousands and thousands of records. Why? The more dropdowns on the search for example the dropdown has to load those records for each drop down. I had a page with multiple dropdowns and multiple dialogs and the page had to load 60,000 records or so NOT GOOD......Of course I did not understand that!

Also The speed without the drop downs is just like a desktop app.
Also something I learned is with the text box if you make it larger then the record size you can use filter >,<,<>, etc. to find records......
It was impressive and I did not know how it would react, but now with all the records and growing at 1,000 per day it has made me convinced that Alpha can handle it from a web app situation.

          Hope this makes it clear!
