Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Web Application Server Install

    OK, now I'm really confused.

Is the WAS a standalone server or do I have to install Alpha5 on every computer I run it on? I hope not, I just bought two licenses assuming that all I would have to do is install it and license it and good to go. I can't get the license to 'stick' when I do this although it does let me register it.

I have some other issues with ports etc. but I will work those out.

(I installed Alpha and the WAS on a VPS with no issues, as described in the VPS tutorial. It's not going as smoothly on this customer's servers though.)

Windows 2003 Small Business Server (Ugh!)
I'm running PostgresSQL on a seperate XP Pro machine in the network and was hoping to install the WAS on that as well, with redirection in the router pointing at that machine - no luck so far. WAS starts OK so nothing is blocking it on Port 80, can't get the local A5W page to launch.

So I loaded it on the Win 2003 SBS machine, again Port 80 is not blocked as the WAS starts, but cannott get the A5W Page to launch. Not the usual messages like 403, etc. Sorry too tired to start it again and get the real message.

Need to have this running by Monday, so it there is anyone out there it would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brian.

    Re: Web Application Server Install

About getting the license to "stick", there are two options:

The most certain way is to open the configuration file and paste it in there. Assuming you have version 9 and your WAS is up to date, the configuration file will be an XML file located at allusers -> applications ->Alpha software -> installations -> configuration (that's a guess from memory...I'm sitting in an airport, so you may need to search around).

Since your number is already activated, you can just open the configuration file with notepad, copy in the license number and save.

The second way is to enter the license number, get the green light, save the configuration, then exit the WAS. Restart, check and repeat as necessary. (I've found 2 or 3 times is usually enough).

      Thanks a Bunch Pat,

The 2 or 3 times did it.
Also got the rest of it worked out as well. I had the security frame check box checked on the WAS and it did not like that at all. Turned it off and voila - all was good.

The Publishing was LAN rights as explained in other threads and got that as well.
I am actually live now and all seems to working well. my License assumption was correct, I was just panicking on that one.

Thanks again for all the help,

Now to make the site look better .. hmmmmmmmmm
