Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how to post or print to txt page

    Is there a way to post data to a text txt or rtf page.

    I have an a5w page that displays info from a record, but I really wanted to save the data as a txt file.

    I know the browser can open a txt file.

    Or can you print a report to a txt file, [I know you can print to pdf and html pages]

    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Yes, you can print to a txt file in several ways, but the easiest is to print a report and select the txt option - it is in there as an option. Either use the genie and set the report type (at the bottom) to txt or use this code:

    dim filter as c
    dim order as c
    Filter = ".T."
    Order = ""
    Dim filename as c
    filename = session.session_folder + "tempreport.pdf"
    filename = report.saveas("Referrer_List@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\refsrc.ddd","txt",filter,order,filename,.f.)
    if file.exists(filename)
    currentform.RedirectTarget = session.session_url + "tempreport.txt?" + time("hms3")
    end if

    You could also use xbasic to write anything to a txt file, but that is a lot more tedious way to go.

        file.from_string()
        file.append_line()

        ...and many many more.... check the online help.

        Dim yourtext as c
        yourtext = <<%txt%
        sasdasdas
        asdasdasd

        asdasdasdasd
        asdasdasdasd%txt%

        file.from_string(session.session_folder + "file.txt",yourtext)

        Then response.redirect(session.session_folder + "file.txt") or ?file.to_blob(session.session_folder + "file.txt")

          One of the great features of xbasic is the huge range of text editing functions, as well as the wonderful functions like file.append_line() which even generate the file if it's not already there.... FAR easier than having to create a report if all you want is genuinely just a text file.

              I often use the file.append() method described by Andrea. Here is an example of a nice log record per transaction.
              Code:
              IF writelog = "True"
              	dim fp as p
              	filename = "mylog.log" ' might be dynamic filename or static as in example
              	dim logtext as c
              	logtext= "LOG EVENT " + now() + crlf() + \
              	"Result   : " + r_resultCode + crlf() + \
              	"InvID    : " + t_invid + crlf() + \
              	"LocnID   : " + t_locationid + crlf() + \
              	"NameOnAct: " + t_custfname + " " + t_custlname  + crlf() + \
              	"Name on Invoice: " + t_invName + crlf() + \
              	"Acct on Invoice: " + t_invAcct + crlf() + \
              	"ProcTime : " + alltrim(str(now() - starttime,10,5))  + crlf() + \
              	"--------------------------------------------------" + crlf()
              	file.append(filename,logtext)
              END IF

                Thanks for that example Steve, I was looking into a way of keeping an easy trace log of a similar nature myself.

                I really wish I'd read up on the append functions from the start as my first experiments with text files used the "lower" functions where you have to open and close the file, check if it exists and so on...

                I really do love the text parsing functions in Alpha5 though, and higher/wrapper functions like the append & append_line functions just take the hassle out of routine coding :)
