Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Lookup tables and Web apps

I saw that you can't carry over the field rules to the web components (), but I'm also having a difficult time figuring out how to make the web component act like the field rule...

    For instance:

Client field in workorder table looks at the client table to choose a client. If that client doesn't exist in the lookup table, we want to add them.

I can't find the place where you can set it up to allow for adds & edits for the lookup table on a web component.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Lookup tables and Web apps

    Welcome to the message board.

The field rules on desktop are much more advanced compared to what is available on the web. You can do anything on the web, but you may have to work it differently than you might on the desktop. Here is one example of how to accomplish your task:
    • Follow the Help document on creating a Lookup field from your web dialog or grid.
    • Normally the fields in a lookup grid are Labels and the grid is Read-Only, because you DON'T want anyone changing values. But in your case, make the lookup grid fields TextBoxes and editable.
    • Then under Update Properties, uncheck Allow Delete and Allow Update.
    • Publish and test. Your screen will look something like my attached image.
    • Note that my fields appear to be editable; they have a solid box around them like data-entry fields.
    • But because you unchecked Allow Update, the existing records cannot be edited. Any attempt will be rejected (without an error msg) when you click Submit.
    • BUT you can add records.

So, if you cannot find your record, add a record on one of the blank rows and click Submit. The new record will become part of the lookup and you can now click the Select link to select that record.

Only problem with the above is if you need to add DETAIL to your new record, information beyond what will fit neatly on the lookup screen. You can still do that, but its a few more steps.

Re: Lookup tables and Web apps

      thanks for the welcome. :)

The project I'm creating is a full scale web project management application.

View Schedule, add job, edit job, track time, reports, etc

Viewing the schedule is for all logged on users and add/edit are for some users for security.

So... I have a drop down for the client field on the schedule that dynamically pulls from the client table. When we have a new client though, we want to add it from that screen instead of closing it and using another web component for adding clients then coming back.

I'd also be fine with putting a little icon beside the dropdown that allows them to add from there. Just a hyperlink click... Don't know how to do that either though. I'm a newbie.

      Here's how it looks now...
