Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Forms in Desktop cannot be migrated to the web environment. You need to recreate your forms.

        And dialogs too !

Not so comfortable, true, particularly at first, but that's the web - and it will become much more comfortable as you get used to them.

Not so customizable, very true, but again, as you work with them, you will get better and better at crating very useful, good looking forms ...

Is it possible to make the grid-forms to throw data into a dataset from desktop?

You make it sound like only forms will have to be re-created. How does one get their database files linked to the web components so multiple users can have access and add data or run queries on the databases without having the ability to edit field structures, etc?

Is going from desktop to networked/application server going to require re-entry of all data? :\
The more I read on this the more it seems that is the case.

"Total training" was a bit of a farce..."I'm going to brush over this complex function really quickly because I don't have time to..."

Essentially I want to be able to take what we have and make it available to everyone within our LAN. It sounds difficult to go both the web based route and the mapped drive route, and I'm unsure as to whether either will be fully on the mark and it seems very much to be a one or the other option.

Try reading any web app documentation you have... how to use and publish your desktop tables is pretty much one of the most basic things there are...

My apologies, I'm as noob as noob gets with this whole deal.

And I got the tables to work, so I've seen how it works now a bit. I'm onto making forms.

Just have a look-see at any of the samples for the web app server that are installed with Alpha5, plenty of examples there.

Either I'm mis-understanding you or you aren't understanding the relationship between the desktop and WAS.

Infrastructure...network wise? I'm not sure what you're meaning by infrastructure. If that is what you mean, we have a small server here through which everyone has access.

I've got a platinum license and the WAS and unlim. runtime engines so I was going to try to work everything around that and give everyone access to all the databases with all of them working off the same files. I really am doing this pretty blindly. The databases were set up a long time ago and I'm updating the whole thing and trying to streamline it as much as I can, but I've no previous database experience.
