Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Tab Controls

It seems this should be incredibly easy, but I haven't been able to make it work. I have one table with many fields. Have made a grid to be used on a web page, but I'd like to use tab control to help sort the information. No matter whether I insert tab controls in the main grid component, or the detail view, or whether I use columnar layout or tabular, nor what tab control type I use. The result is the same - the "tabs" come out lined up vertically one above another and all open all the time. The panes do not cover one another, nor do they "hide" when the pane is clicked. I must be doing something wrong, but I have no idea what it might be. Can someone point me in the right direction? The tab controls all look beautiful - they just don't function the way I want them to. Maybe I have misunderstood what should happen?
Not a question, but a comment - I have been working (hard!) at learning A5 for the last several weeks. I like the program, but I will admit I had much less trouble learning to work with MS Access, even though I've gone through all the tutorials and even a couple of books for A5. I'm coming up to the deadline for converting our database files over at work. The data import is easy, but I keep ending up spending hours trying to figure out silly little things like this!

    Re: Grid Tab Controls

It is difficult to tell exactly waht you did from your descriptuion but:

First, the tab controls do not go in the detail view.

In the main part of the grid, put the Tab Control as the first item, and your first Tab Pane as your second item. Then put a few fields after that first Tab Pane. Then put another Tab Pane and another few fields. With this so far, you will have a form with 2 panes.

    Hope this helps ...

      Re: Grid Tab Controls

      Thanks for your reply, Gary.

Just to be sure I had it right, I tried again from the beginning. I have a table, begin with a tab control, then a tab pane, then some fields. Then another tab control, tab pane, and fields. And so on.

If I choose the default tab control type "single bands," the result is something that looks like tab controls with bands that are always open. They have the arrow icon at the left as though they would close, but they don't do anything.

If I choose tab control type "bands," they look and work as expected.

If I choose "tabs," they look and work exactly the same as what I get with single bands - that is, they are static.

Any thoughts/suggestions about what might be the problem (and how to fix it?)

      Thanks.

        Re: Grid Tab Controls

        Laurie,

I have tried all and they all seem to work. But, I generally use the "Tabs" with align set to "Top". That gives me 2,3, or 4 tabs at the top, and when I click on a tab, the different panes will show.

Is that not working for you?

If not, I would suggest trying this on a completely different grid or dialog. Maybe something got corrupted with the particular grid that you are working with. I f that's the case, you might have to rebuild the form that you want.

          Laurie,

          Try
          Tab Control
          Tab Pane
          fields
          Tab Pane
          fields

Don't use a second tab control.

            Pat,

I did not catch that. Yes, absoultely, the second tab conrtol will definitely cause unpredictable results.

              >>> Maybe you give can a picture of your grid field tab definition and a more clear definition what you are trying to accomplish; Or expect...

Maybe " they just don't function the way I want them to"...

Please make a picture to make clear what you expect them to do.

First: Attached a picture of a definition I just made:
After you inserted a Tab control, click Tab properties, and select what you want. In this example I selected: Type: Tabs and Align: Top.

Then I inserted 2 Tab panes. One just after the Tab Control and one half way the fields. I also inserted a frame within the first Tab pane.

Second Picture give the result when you select second Tab.

Last picture shows I defined: Grid Properties , Repeating Columns : 1.

The first 2 pictures shows what you can expect. If this is different you expect, then please define what you expect differently.

              regards, Ron

Yep, the problem was having more than one tab control. Taking out all but the first one makes everything work perfectly. Thank you all very much for your help!! (Don't you love it when "fixes" are easy?)
