Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Linking a webpage to a database

    (Newbie Alert!)

    I need to create a Gift Certificate form and need some help.

    I am trying to accomplish four things:
    1. create a webpage that will be hosted on a campany LAN
    2. embed a webcomponent (a form) that users can fill out
    3. mash a "submit" button that will take that data and populate a database
    4. print out the newly created record for the customer

    So far, I have created a web component, embedded it into a webpage and created a table into which newly entered data will be stored.

    However the embedded web component looks like this:

    I have tested the web component in "Preview" mode in Alpha5 but nothing populates. I assume that is because I am not on the live server?

    So I published the project onto the server.

    When I veiw it in a browser I get a blank page with the following source code in the "body" tag:
    <body>
    <p><br>
    <table>
    <tr>
    <td><%A5 ?x_certdialog.Output.Body.Dialog_Echo %></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><%A5 ?x_certdialog.Output.Body.Xbasic_Code_Errors %></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td><%A5 ?x_certdialog.Output.Body.Dialog_HTML %></td>
    </tr>
    </table></p>
    </body>
    So...
    first, how do I get the webpage to view in the browser,
    second, how do I get the form to populate the table,
    and third, how do I print the current record?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Jeff

    Welcome to Alpha!

    From looking at your image, you have embeded the web component in an html page. You need to place the web component in an A5W Page not an html page. What you are looking to do is very simple in Alpha but you just have to get your head wrapped around how Alpha works. Have you taken a look at the web publishing section of the help file? Lots of info in there to guide you.

      In addition, when you say you publish to the server, do you have a copy of the Alpha Five Application Server running on that server? You need that for public access or even to display the dialog at all.

        Thanks for the response, Jeff. That link looks like it has what I need.

        I'm going to spend some time looking through it to see if I can fill in the gaps in my knowledge (tall call for one document!).

        Again...thanks.

          Steve,

          You're assumption is correct that I have it running locally. I'll install it on the server and see if that helps.

          Thanks.

            Ok...I've been spinning in circles trying to figure this out. I know Jeff said it is easy, but all the documentation seems to be confusing me even more.

            I'm starting from scratch now and was wondering if it's possible that I could get a Step 1...Step 2....Step 3...list of what I need to do.

            For instance, after I create a new project, do I next need to create a table? Or do I need to create a folder on the server? Or do I need to create the web component (form)? Or do I need to do something that I am also clueless about?

            And even after I get the functionallity up and running, I need to make it look REALLY elegant. Please tell me this is possible.

            Thanks again.

              Jeff said, it's simple to do in Alpha, but it's not that simple for a newbie.

              You created a table already. Good. Forget about the dialog, because you need to code that. Instead try a grid - you won't need to code it, and you can make it be a "single-record-at-a-time", input form.

              Anything is possible w. time and patience. It can be as elegant as your own skill set and sense of aesthetics allows.

                That's why I said.....

                ....but you just have to get your head wrapped around how Alpha works
                DK

                Here is a rough overview of the steps.

                1. Create your table
                2. Enter some play data just so you can see something when you publish your site
                3. Go to the Web Projects Control Panel
                4. Create a grid as Peter says - there are a TON of ways to configure this component so you may have to play around with what works for you. For starters why don't you just make a tabular read only grid - just so you can get some gratification. You just need to choose what fields you want for the columns.
                5. Save this component
                6. Now create a new a5w page from the web projects control panel. It makes you save the page before inserting a component so as soon as you create it - just save the page as test.a5w. Now just click on the insert component button in the toolbar and place your recently created grid component into the page.
                7. Save the page again
                8. You should be able to publish to the localhost now and view your page
                9. Make sure you have turned on the Application Server inside Alpha or you page won't be able to be served to you.

                Regards,

                Jeff

                  Danny,

                  One more thing - hang in there! You'll get it, and it WILL be worth it.

                  Alpha is MUCH easier than the other "solutions" like mySql & php, etc.
