Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    64 Bit PDF driver

Has there been any update on the Amyuni PDF driver for 64 bit machines?

I have customers that would like to purchase and use the Application server to build web apps for connecting to their Alpha databases, but they will not pursue it because they can't make reports available due to Alpha PDF printing problem on 64 bit machines.

I just upgraded to Server 2008 and had to install as a 32 bit instead of 64 bit because of this problem.

Has anyone heard anything about getting that fixed?

    Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

We are going to be upgrading our server in about 3 months and I know that it will be 64 bit, we are not going to do 32 bit just for Alpha App server. We have doing some testing on converting to Alpha, but this may well be a deal breaker for us.

I am curious to see what Alpha's response to this will be.

Thanks for the insight into this. It would have very bad to have installed and converted and found that report printing wouldn't work on our 64 bit machine.

      Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Mike, are you saying that Alpha cannot print reports on 64 bit machines, or that Alpha cannot create PDF images of reports on 64 bit machines? I ask because Bill seems to be thinking that general report printing wouldn't work on their 64 bit machines. Some clarification here might help. Thanks. -- tom

        Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

        Hi Tom,
I didn't discover the PDF problem on 64 bit machines until I tried to setup an Application Server with Zebra Host. Zebra Host set up the virtual server for me as a 64 bit machine. When I loaded the app and got it running, everything worked except for printing reports in the Web App. The routine would for example print a class roster as a temp report, pdf style and then display it on the users screen. This would not work. When I called, I discovered that the Ayumi PDF driver does not work on 64 bit machines. Zebra Host had to rebuild the server (and I had to reinstall everything) as a 32 bit machine to get the pdf printing/display to work.

          Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Thanks. I see now, it's a problem with how the web server renders reports using 64 bit machines, not (necessarily) a problem with how an Alpha Five desktop app would behave on 64 bit machines.

            Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Actually Tom - it is the same thing as far as I can tell. I cannot create pdf's using the Alpha Supplied Amyuni PDF Driver on my Vista 64 bit machine using desktop apps I have created. I have had to use vmware to create a virtual machine and installed XP. A real PIA actually. I think Alpha needs to get this addressed ASAP.

              Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Jeff, thanks. Ok. Let me ask you the same question. In a desktop app on a 64 bit machine are you saying that reports cannot be printed at all? or are you saying that you can't create a PDF image of a report? -- tom

                Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Thanks for pointing this out. I thought I was crazy when I couldn't get to work. We tried doing other things in our testing to get this to work.

I agree that Alpha Software really needs to address this problem. I have noticed other posts over that past months about the Ayumi PDF driver not working on 64 bit machines.

What can be done to encourage Alpha Software to do something about it?

                  Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

                  Hey Tom

You can print fine if that is all you do but you cannot do much else. Definitely not create a pdf. This is more widespread of a problem than it appears too. For instance if you want to save a report as a text file (if I remember correctly) you get the same error because Alpha uses the Amyuni driver to handle that conversion as well it appears to me. I am not at that machine right now to fully go through the errors but it is a real problem that touches more than just creating a pdf. But as I mentioned, just plain printing to a physical printer works fine.

                    Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

I agree with Jeff, that it is a problem beyound the PDF file. If you are in a Web Application, how are you supposed to get a report to print to the screen for a user. Web app users don't have many options for printing.

                      Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

I am not using Vista 64-bit, but noticed this in the Amyuni forum:

Perhaps there is something here that will help. I also wonder if you would get more help on their forum.

                        Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

With Alpha getting close to the release of Version 10, I'll bet 64 bit pdf's will be a Version 10 and above feature that probably won't make it into Version 9.

                          Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

                          Hi Pat,
You may be right about not fixing this version 10. If that is the case, then I believe that is wrong. There are many of us that use the Alpha products and if they are going to be like Microsoft, meaning you have to buy an upgrade, to get a "feature" fixed, then our company will look elsewhere for a database.

I can't believe Alpha would take this approach, but if they do, then that says a lot about their character.
I really hope they fix this problem and fix it soon. And take care of us existing users.

                            Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

This seems to be an issue, and I hope Alpha will fix it soon. It is an issue for us, but I do think Alpha has the users best interests at heart.
I seem to recal an email or posting here a while back where Selyn said that 64 bit was a problem, but I don't remember what we said about getting it fixed.

At least he is aware of it, and hopefully addressing it.

                              Re: 64 Bit PDF driver

Am I wrong in thinking this is an Amyuni problem? If so, about all Alpha could do I suppose is select a different 3rd party to supply the necessary PDF functionality. I wonder what the tradeoffs would be if that were to occur?
