Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A tip and a question about photo upload

    It's amazing what you can do when you don't know any better....

    Here's the tip:
    I needed to upload a series of pictures and then display them with captions. In my table, each record has up to 6 associated pictures. So, I uploaded the photos to a directory named (not surprisingly) "photos" in the web root. Then created a grid, and chose a tab control of type "genie". Each pane contains one picture and one caption. The photo is control type Image and Display format <image>. A photo of the result is shown in screen1. It's nice. You can use the next and previous arrows to scroll through the photos. The picture shows picture 3. And, no programming!

    Now for the question:
    I tried to faithfully copy the code from the help to upload the pictures. Code I used was, in the head section:

    Code:

    Dim vMsg1 as C = "Upload Property Photos. Photos must be jpg type, 600 pixels wide by 400 pixels high."
    vFilename=alltrim(session.listing_id)+"."+alltrim(session.which)+".jpg"
    if eval_valid("cmd")
        file.from_blob("c:\a5\A5Webroot\Photos\\"+vFilename, FileToUpload.data)
     fn="Photos/"+vFilename
        vMsg1 = "Photo "+FileToUpload.filename+" was uploaded as "+vFilename+"."
     tbl=table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\listings")
     indx=tbl.index_primary_put("listing_id")
     vRecNo=tbl.fetch_find(session.listing_id)
     if vRecNo>0 'was found
      tbl.change_begin()
      select
          case session.Which="1"
       tbl.Photo1=fn
          case session.Which="2"
       tbl.Photo2=fn
          case session.Which="3"
       tbl.Photo3=fn
          case session.Which="4"
       tbl.Photo4=fn
          case session.Which="5"
       tbl.Photo5=fn
          case session.Which="6"
       tbl.Photo6=fn
      end select
      tbl.change_end()
     end if
     tbl.close()
    end if
    And in the body:

    Code:

    <p>
    <form action="<%a5 ?request.script_name %>" method ="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">
    <input type="file" name="FileToUpload">&nbsp;<input type="submit" name="cmd" value="Upload File"></form>
    </p>
    But, along with the photo, I'm getting an errant "> See screen2.

    I can't figure out where that's coming from. Any suggestions?

    Pat

    Never mind...I bumbled into the solution. i still don't know where that "> came from, but changing the type to image (from link) eliminated it.
