Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Square Root Function Web Dialog Screen

My issue is that I need the square root function in order to calculate fields on my web page. I have got other parts working and trawlled the help files but can't seem to find specific reference to the Square Root function.

The reason for choosing the Dialog option is because it allows client processing.

    Any one got any suggestions....

    Thanks

    Paul

    SQRT()

Found by opening help, choosing index tab, typing SQ

Also available by choosing Search tab, typing "square root", and pressing ENTER

      Thanks Tom,

I am talking about the Dialog screen "Calculated Field Expression". There is no Sqrt() option, plus when I use the sqrt() as you mention I get the attached error.

        You might try:
        (ac*1000*sd/2)^0.5

Gettting the square root is the same as raising it to the 1/2 power.

          Cal, I tried

          (ac*1000*sd/2)^0.5

This does not work. However, the following part of the formula does.

          (ac*1000*sd/2)

Therefore, I can only conclude that while + - * / are available (^) to the power is not. Well not yet anyway.

It looks like I will have to use a grid after all.

          thanks

            Paul,

In my tests, the sqrt() function works just fine. I tried it on an a5w page, and also within the Initialize event of a dialog.

What exactly are you trying to do?

              OK,

I see what you are saying. It does generate the error when used in the calculated field expression. I would suggest you report this as a bug.

In the mean time though, why not see if you can do what you want by using the events, or even making a call to an a5w page, and then reloading the page that contains the dialog.

Re: Square Root Function Web Dialog Screen

This is not a bug. A Calculated Field Expression on a web dialog runs only on the client, which is your browser, and only recognizes JavaScript. The expression builder shows a list of functions that are supported in the JavaScript supplied by Alpha. Any other valid JavaScript function or expression can also be used. However, since the action does not make a request to the server, xbasic can not be used as only the server recognizes xbasic.

There is a standard JavaScript function that will give you square root

                Math.sqrt(TextBox0 )

Just wanted to share the answer to my Square Root issue and also thank Jerry of Alpha. The answer is to use the Java script mathmatical function :-

                  Math.sqrt(a)

                  This works a treat.

Other function available to those who have more challenging designed are:-

                  Math.abs(a) // the absolute value of a
Math.ceil(a) // integer closest to a and not less than a
Math.floor(a) // integer closest to and not greater than a
                  Math.max(a,b) // the maximum of a and b
                  Math.min(a,b) // the minimum of a and b
                  Math.pow(a,b) // a to the power b
Math.random() // pseudorandom number in the range 0 to 1
                  Math.round(a) // integer closest to a
                  Math.sqrt(a) // square root of a
