Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strange Dialog Behavior

    Gents:

I have Dialog that is behaving very strangely. Except for three fields, it gives me error messages for the fields, even when the values have been filled in! The Web site is MedriskScore

    Try this:
    1. Fill in the Basic screen
    2. Go to the Summary screen, and Clear the data.
    3. Go back to the Basic screen, and try to enter new data.

I tried removing the validations, saving, and putting them back, but it didnt help.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? The behavior only started recently.

    Thanx,
    EZR

    Re: Strange Dialog Behavior

When I saw this picture, I got an information overload...And could not think straight anymore... Gulp...What ever you are trying to get across...

Slow down...It's just too much information ( is it information? or just data?).

And how do you " Clear the data" anyway...

    Reset me please.

Sorry if this sounds harsh. Don not mean to offend you, but I really do not understand your question.

Just overwhelmed with your web presentation approach. Sorry again. I am from Holland...

There is a menu on the top and bottom of the screen.

Click on the "Basic Info" item, then on the "Summary" item, then back to the "Basic" item.

        Did all that,

but I did not see any strange behaviour.

        Define "strange behaviour.." :

What did you expect and what did you get.

I tried deleting the offending fields and recreating them, but it didn't help.

I get the "Field cannot be empty." error message, even after I have filled in the fields.

I did some tracing, and the dialog calls the "Validate" event, and then the "Activate" event, when I press the "Submit" (Calculate) button.

Shouldn't it call the AfterValidate event, before "Activate"?

                Re: Strange Dialog Behavior

Check you don't have validation rules set in the dialog builder, also check you do not have a field rule in your table that is reporting an error. At the end of the day unless you post the problem dialog, it is very difficult to help. Remember if any of the events find an error they won't fire, and they won't tell you that nothing happened in some cases. If you are using calculating show/hides etc this will also cause error down the line that come from the VB script.

                Post your dialog.

                Good luck.

                  Attached is the dialog.

You can see it in action at MedriskScore

The "Basic" screen is the problem one.

I hope you can help. This is driving me crazy.

                    Re: Strange Dialog Behavior

                    First look returns this:

Also I'm under the pump - but if you are still having problems I'll look again tomorrow.

you are diming all valiables as c "C"

yet in your controls on the dialog you are setting some to Numeric "N"

if you are going to use vaiables in anything other than "c" for either dialog controls or table/fields thenyou need to Alpha know what to do as all thing in the browser are "c" characters.

                    so give this ago

                    Code:
                    session.Age       = convert_type(CurrentForm.Controls.Age.value,"N")
                    session.Sex       = convert_type(CurrentForm.Controls.Sex.value,"C")
and so on. you see what's happening? as the event is running it does not know the value of "c" say for feet ,you want "6" to appear but might as well be keying "six".

                    Sum up:
change all to "c" or use convert_type.

hope this helps nice and tidy stuff - well done so far.

You may want to also remove some No's to tidy up the dialog

e.g. Do you Smoke - a yes check box will do here, if we know the answer is "yes" then we already know it's not "No" - just a little easier to read.

                      Re: Strange Dialog Behavior

                      Thanx, Peter, for your help.

I understand that, even if I declare a dialog field numeric, it is really a numeric character. The "numeric" is only to guide validation rules. When I need to do calculations, I'm using val(<FeldName>) and locally declared numeric (as n) variables. Alpha seems to automatically convert the numeric variable back to character, when I assign it to a character session variable.

I'll go over every inch of the event code again, but I don't think that is it.

It's not clear, in the Help files, what type conversions XBasic does automatically and what you have to do explicitly.

                      Thanx,
                      EZR

I solved this problem a year ago, but I don't remember how. Somebody is asking now, for help with the same problem.

If anybody remembers what to do, would you please post the information?
