Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    questions on hosting web/desktop app

my site is ready to publish and im unsure of how to host.

we have a server with the following spec
    3 ghz processor
    2 mb ram
    60gb free hard drive space
8mb broadband line (not dedicated to us)

i have been advised that if we host the web app ourselves, our setup wont handle any more than a handful of users on the site at any one time and it will bring our server to an almost stand still. we use our server for all of our business needs, including some employees using terminal services to access our desk top app.

i dont mind using a VPS, but it occurred to me if we do then we wont be able to use our desk top application.

we use the desk top far more than our customers will use the web part of the app.

an ideal solution is, we host, then we all of our requirements are met.

can anyone offer any advice on any of this.

    thanks

Host it on your in-house server and don't worry about the performance. Even if you have dozens of web users, most of their time is idle as far as the server is concerned. It only is put to use when the user submits a page and gets a response. Having said that, there have been reports of an Alpha web app slowing down a server due to bugs or poorly written code. But if this is the case for your app, this would occur on you VPS also. Worse comes to worse, you can make other arrangements later on IF you find out your in-house arrangement will not work.

In my experience an 8mb broadband line is not sufficient for a web server, because such deals put a heavy bias on DOWNLOAD speeds, whereas for a web server it's the UPLOAD speed that really counts.

          Andrea,

          What do you recommend then?

As a rule of thumb, dedicated line with a guaranteed UPLOAD speed of 500-1'500 kBpS is worth far more than a 2-8 Meg DOWNLOAD broadband line. Also, remember these "up to 8 Meg" offers usually mean a maximum of 6Mb download speed if you are lucky, with the UPLOAD being a heck of a lot less, usually around a tenth or less of the upload speed.

It really depends on WHAT you are hosting, however. For a straight HTML site with no downloads (no PDFs etc.) and so forth you might be OK with a "consumer-oriented" (e.g. download-biased) broadband deal aimed at private households rather than businesses.

i am able to obtain a broadband upgrade to 16mb download and 1.3mb upload.

we have a few pdf guides which users can download and in the main, the a5w part of the site will be read only for client information.

based upon the comments, we hopefully will be ok.

                Richard,

I would suggest to host it in house. In doing this you can determine what you will need and will not need depending on your online and desktop applications. Test it out, upload it to the server and start letting selected customers check it out, and give you feedback on their experiences. In doing this you also get to check out how it is reacting to your in house server. You can decide if you feel you need a larger upload net package or if your current package will provide what you need for the time being. If the web app is lagging the other programs your server is running, you may want to pick up some more ram for your server.

In testing these ideas out, you are just wasting time to determine what you will or will not need. Good luck!

I would have to agree with NoeticCC its all about upload speed, our WAS runs on the company SDSL which averages 1.8mb in both directions.
To date we have had no problems with the site being slow because of the amount of users logged in.

anyone see any issues arising from this

host the main part of my site (which will be mainly html pages) on a hosted server (say 1and1 who we currently use)

host the a5w pages on our server on a sub domain

set the links on the html pages to the subdomain.

my thinking here, is if the majority of our traffic is using html pages then these really dont need to be hosted in the same locaiton as the a5w pages and would reduce traffice to our server.

the a5w pages are mainly for existing clients.

                      Richard,

I think that is a good idea. I currently do something sort of like that. I have videos and pdfs hosted at a hosting company, and the rest of my application is hosted in house. The videos and pdfs hog bandwidth and thus could slow down my server, particularly if many users are downloading videos and pdfs at the same time, so I think I get a net increase in the speed and efficiency of my overall application.

And now that I think of it, I may employ this idea for certain scripts and reports, which are server intensive - perhaps setting up a second server (with a second server license) to run those. That I believe could be run from the same internet connection and still realize a net benefit because when certain reports or scripts are run, they can slow down the server so that other users doing just data input on that same server would notice a slow down. By separating those reports and scripts to run from a second in-house server, it seems that the slow down problem would be alleviated.

Any thoughts on this latter part?

If you want the full benefit of desktop and web access, then go inhouse, and if you have issues, fix them and remain in house - you may find v10 will assist in the future, but keep it simple to start with now. I'm a advocate of VPS - I love it - BUT when concurrent access to data is required at the desk top along with the virtualization of the data over the web, it must be hosted on your server. I've worked and developed in this very evironment and it worked like a charm.

been a while, but thought id update with the final chosen set up.

i did put all static pages on 1and1 server and all .a5w pages on our server.

we took a broadband service - adsl2+ with an upload speed of 2.3mb.

its working great and speeds are fantastic - so far.

ill update if any problems later as traffic increases.

That sounds great, 2.3 mb is a very decent upload speed :)
