Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL table creation

Ok I am a complete newbie here so forgive any silly questions.

I have a green field application. I want to use SQL as the database engine fine not a problem I know but can I:

A: use alpha5 v9 plat to create the tables ie fdefine them then create them on the sql engine?

B: if i make an app using dbf as is the default and at a later stage i want create sql tables instead can this be done.

this last scenario is especially useful for prototyping!!!!

I did look but could not see a way of doing it.

    TIA
    Florian

    Re: SQL table creation

A: you will have to create the tables on the sql system

B: You can define grids and dialogues based on DF tables of course. If you later create sql table structures (which should have similar format and field names/types) you then only have to change the grid data source and query definition to connect to the sql table, resave and republish.

      Re: SQL table creation

I have found that depending on the SQL database system, designing the basic table in Alpha5 as a dbf and then creating an operation to create this table on the SQL db works very well. mySQL seems the best supported/most compatible in this respect.

          Re: SQL table creation

Try the sample apps that ship with Alpha5 (see screenshot), and the web help, in particular the Tutorials section:

          http://support.alphasoftware.com/alphafivehelpv9/

Also the V9 online docs have video tutorials: https://www.alphasoftware.com/alphaf...inum/index.asp

For help on SQL databases see documentation of your database software manufacturer.

            Re: SQL table creation

            thanks,
I am ok with using existing tables on an sql engine no worries there. but still am not sure how to 'convert' from a dbf app to an active sql link table. ie design in dbf then how do I 'unplug' from dbf to sql, in this case mysql.

                Re: SQL table creation

Good thing about Alpha is that every single grid is attached to its own data source...

When you use DBF files you connect to them by using data source "Alpha Five table"..

When using SQL Databases your datasource is "remote datasource accessed via AlphaDOA.." or ADO.
Then at QUERY you use the connection string as you defined earlier for your SQL DB system..
Then at table/ view name you enter the table or view name as known in your sql DB.
This can be a table or a view you defined in you SQL DB. You can also enter a SQL statement here where you determine the fields for which tables / views used.

                Republish and voila...

Your application this way can have access to multiple databases, which is a great feature of Alpha..

                Regards, Ron
