Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Best way to transfer file from the server to another server - ftp? how?

    What is the easiest way to transfer a text file from my server to another server?

    I do this by having 2 instances of my 3rd party FTP running. One for each server. Mouse over file you want to copy, copy it then go to the other server with the other FTP and paste.

      Re: Best way to transfer file from the server to another server - ftp? how?

      Hi Eric,

      Thanks for the reply. I was actually wanting to do the file transfer with code from within the application. I have a text file that gets created and stored on my in-house server. I need to write code that will, at the click of a link or press of a button, send that file to someone else's server, via secure FTP. I have the address, username, password, etc. of the server I need to send to, but need help on what the code would be to send this file to that other server.

      Any ideas would be great!

        You can create an FTP script in a text editor that logs in and transfers the file. Go to a CMD box on your computer and type FTP (press enter) then type ? (press enter) which should show a command set. The purpose of that is just to show you have an FTP command set right on your computer. Now, find a good reference on how to write an FTP script as a batch file. Call that from your program, etc.

        Another possible option is to use HTTP_POST() function. Not FTP, but it will transfer an unlimited amount of information across networks. Probably not what you want because you have to have code on the other server to recieve the post.

          Thanks Steve. I was just looking at the help, and found the ftp_put_file() function.

          Do you (or does anyone) have any experience with using that?

            I am not sure if the main FTP functions work from WAS but ftp_script_run_silent works fine for us.

            Code:
            Dim FTPcoms as c
            FTPcoms = <<%ftp%
            connect|{ServerIP}
            onerror|error|Could not connect
            login|{email}|{password}
            onerror|error|Could not log in
            cd|{directory}
            put|{yourlocalfile}|{file.extension}
            quit%ftp%

            Dim FTPres as c
            FTPres = ftp_script_run_silent(FTPcoms)
            The cd|directory bit is only necessary if you are transferring to anything other than the root directory on the FTP server.
            Not sure what you mean by "secure" FTP?

              Andrea,

              I really appreciate that. I will study that and see if it works for me. Thanks!

                I haven't tried the other FTP functions in a while but when I originally did this was the only one that seemed to work for uploading files. The ftp listing functions (to list files on an FTP site) worked on the web though but that is not useful in this situation I guess!

                  Hi Andrea,

                  I recently needed to get some files from a secure ftp site using the sftp protocol. The party supplying the files suggested using a free program called winSCP3 and since I could not find anything in the Alpha docs that suggested any of the built in functions supported sftp I went with winSCP.

                  Do you know if alpha's functions support sftp?

                  winSCP is working well for us but Gary did mention in his second post that he was looking for "secure ftp". I call winSCP with a command line using Alpha's sys_shell_wait()

                    It doesn't look like it allows for sftp at the moment but I was not sure what he meant by "secure ftp".

                      Thanks,
                      Am new to the ftp thingy as well, at least from the automation side, so thought I might have been missing something.

                        It was my understanding that sftp and Secure ftp are the same thing - and is required for transmitting certain types of sensitive data.

                        Tim,

                        Can you use sys_shell from the WAS - I didn't think you could?

                          I do have another option that would suffice for what I am trying to do. I could go the other server's web site. From there, there is a upload field, with a browse button, allowing user to search their computer for a file to upload to that server. This would be easy for a desktop application because all the files would reside on the user's computer. But in the WAS, the files are on the server of course. When I go to that other site, and browse for a file to upload, I only have access to files on my local computer. How can I upload a file from the server to the other server?

                            Gary,
                            My apologies. I should have specified that my usage was on the desktop side. My reason for posting was to both bring attention to the fact you were probably looking to use sftp and also if anyone had any info on whether Alpha has that capability. It looks like my initial investigations are correct and that alpha at this stage can't handle that.

                            Whether sys_shell works from the app server I have no idea. i have no expereience with the WAS apart from following the forum a bit.

                            My intuition says that if you triggerred a script that used sys_shell and fed it all the info such as the files to transfer using vaiables that it might work. But intuition (especially the male kind ) is often flawed.
