Validate event questions ....

In the Validate event of a dialog, I have the following:

if val(CurrentForm.Controls.ptexp.value)>val(CurrentForm.Controls.fee.value)
CurrentForm.Has_Error = .t.
CURRENTFORM.ERROR_MESSAGE = "Ptexp ("+CurrentForm.Controls.ptexp.value+") cannot be greater than Fee ("+CurrentForm.Controls.fee.value+")!"
end
end if


In the form, I put values of 150.00 for Fee and 220.00 for Ptexp. When I click Submit, the form does NOT display the error. I have been looking at this for hours. What am I doing wrong?

You have to put the word "Then" at the end of the condition.

If (<condition>) Then
Statement(s)
Else
statement(s)
End If

EZ: "then" is assumed and can be left out.

Gary: your formula works exactly as copied from your example in my test. Works whether the data type is numeric or char.

I would think it should, but oddly enough, it does not.

While this does not work:

if val(CurrentForm.Controls.ptexp.value)>val(CurrentForm.Controls.fee.value)
CurrentForm.Has_Error = .t.
CURRENTFORM.ERROR_MESSAGE = "Ptexp ("+CurrentForm.Controls.ptexp.value+") cannot be greater than Fee ("+CurrentForm.Controls.fee.value+")!"
end
end if

This does:

if val(ptexp)>val(fee)
CurrentForm.Has_Error = .t.
CURRENTFORM.ERROR_MESSAGE = "ptexp+") cannot be greater than Fee ("+fee+")!"
end
end if

Does this make any sense to you?

Isn't there an extra "end" statement here?

if val(ptexp)>val(fee)
CurrentForm.Has_Error = .t.
CURRENTFORM.ERROR_MESSAGE = "ptexp+") cannot be greater than Fee ("+fee+")!"
end
end if

I would still put the "Then" in, just for clarity.

I never use "then" in an if statement and have never had a problem over the years.

I also tried the code with and without the "end", and still, only the second set of code works.

I once had a situation where val() didn't work, but convert_type( ,"N") did. Just for fun, you might try that.

Hi Pat,

As strange as it may seem, the only way I get this to work is with ptexp, fee, etc, not with any currentform.controls etc

I tried the following just to see:

if convert_type(CurrentForm.Controls.ptexp.value,"N")=200.00
CurrentForm.Has_Error = .t.
CURRENTFORM.ERROR_MESSAGE = "Hi Pat"
end
end if

I put a value of 200.00 in the ptexp field, and it did not work.
