Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Printing to PDF Issues

    Hello Andrea,

    I specifically pointed out Firefox at first because Firefox is my choice of browsers. At the time I had unistalled Internet Explorer because of the security issues associated with it. I did try IE and it functioned the same. As far as the setting for opening the PDF in a new window, I can't remember where I found the setting. I need to learn to make note of things better so I can return to them when needed.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Steve

    Yes I think so, it is some quirk in Acrobat Reader or something along those lines. You said below you found a property within Alpha, did you mean in Acrobat Reader? I don't seem to be getting the problem any more with more recent releases of Acrobat Reader but do recall something like this when first playing around with file downloads.

    Re: Printing to PDF Issues

    Linearized is an option when producing any PDF, it means it loads page by page (it is also called web optimized). You can supply a set of settings on a web page that allow you to change things like if it's linearized, the quality of the images etc.

    See below - sometimes linearizing a PDF if it's more than one page can make a difference to how fast it loads in a browser:
    Code:
    Dim pSet as p
    pSet.Concatenate=.F.
    pSet.HasWatermark=.F.
    pSet.MultilingualSupport=.T.
    pSet.EmbedFonts=.F.
    [COLOR="Red"]pSet.LinearizeForWeb=.T.[/COLOR]
    pSet.Colors2GrayScale=.F.
    pSet.ConvertHyperlinks=.t.
    pSet.WatermarkType="Text"
    pSet.WatermarkText="D R A F T"
    pSet.WatermarkFontName="Times New Roman"
    pSet.WatermarkFontSize=172
    pSet.WatermarkRotation=450
    pSet.WatermarkColorHex="E8FED2"
    pSet.WatermarkHorizPos=120
    pSet.WatermarkVertPos=-120
    pSet.WatermarkOnTop=.F.
    pSet.WatermarkPDF=""
    pSet.Encrypt=.F.
    pSet.OwnerPassword=""
    pSet.UserPassword=""
    pSet.CanPrint=.T.
    pSet.CanModifyDocument=.T.
    pSet.CanCopy=.T.
    pSet.CanAddNotes=.T.
    pSet.Use128BitKey=.F.
    pSet.JpegQuality="Low"
    You can then supply the array of settings to the report when retrieving:

    Code:
    filename = report.saveas(reportname,"pdf",filter,order,filename,.f.,[COLOR="Red"]pSet[/COLOR],args)
    Often when opening files in a browser your computer takes a while loading up Acrobat Reader or the relevant browser plug-in, which can be a pain. there are ways of offering a file for opening or saving (search to_blob on this forum) which make it feel a lot faster because it isn't loading the whole PDF before displaying it.

    Re: Printing to PDF Issues

    I made a couple of discoveries. The problem I am having is opening the PDF file within a browser. I found a property within Alpha to prevent the PDF from opening in the browser and by unchecking the property, the pdf opened in a new window outside of the browser. When doing this there was no problems. The PDF document was created and opened immediately.

    On my personal laptop, from within the development mode, PDFs need to be created and displayed in a different window. Otherwise I am waiting for the PDF to be built from top to bottom when the PDF is created within the browser.

    Anybody experienced this?

    Re: Printing to PDF Issues

    I have tried it both in Firefox and IE 6.0. Both Equally Slow. I am trying to print one record or a report with a half a dozen records. What is the linearized option? I am doing this in developer mode.

    thanks.

    Have you tried it in a different browser (or why else do you specifically point out FireFox?)?

    What size is the PDF, how many records, how long does it take in develeoper mode to retrieve al records?

    What (download) speed Internet connection are you testing this from and what is your server upload speed?

    Also try the Linearized option in the PDF/report options that should make it load faster.

    Printing to PDF Issues

    When printing to a PDF Document working in Firefox, the creation of the report is very slow. It displays a file and you can see the creation of the report from top to bottom. It also seems as though the application is hanging.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
