Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Closing a popup ...

    I have a grid with a link that opens a popup. The popup has a link to close the window which works fine. My question is:

    I would like to have code in the submit button that (1)saves the record, (2)closes the popup window, and then (3)refreshes the originating page. Can anyone tell me how to do 2 and 3?

    I can do No2:

    End your popup's xbasic with a response.redirect statement that opens a new window. That new windows will only contain javascript that closes the window. Here is the script:

    HTML Code:
    <html>
    <head>
    <script language="JavaScript">
    window.opener='X';
    window.open('','_parent','');
    window.close();
    </script>
    <title></title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>javascript to close browser</p>
    </body></html>

      Hi Steve,

      I am a bit confused. Does this mean in the AfterUpdateRecords event of the grid, I put a response.redirect to a new page? And in that page I put the code you provided?

        I think so - basically anything interactive like closing a window needs to be done in Javascript. Xbasic can't magically close a browser window because it's a server side scripting language, so you either have to redirect to a page with Javascript in (after things are saved etc.) OR you set a page variable after submission which then triggers the Javascript on an a5w page.

        E.g.

        If eval_valid("isokvar") then
        print(Javascript)
        End If

          Thanks for that explanation,

          Okay. I put that code on a blank a5w page that contains nothing but the code that Steve provided above.

          I called that page 1_java_close.a5w.

          I then put the following in the AfterUpdateRecords event of the popup:

          response.redirect("1_java_close.a5w")

          Unfortunately, it does not work. When I click the submit button of the popup (which now contains the response.redirect to the javascript page), it returns me to my login screen. I have set Page security for this new a5w page to always allowed, and have published the new page and the web security files. Still no luck.

          Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?

            Re: Closing a popup ...

            Sorry, I drove 1000 miles just after my last post on this. I had used this technique where I only had one page open, and wanted nothing open when it was done. I would think the popup would just disappear after you click submit (and it redirects to the close page). All I can think of is the page with javascript is not accessible due to security (even though you said you set it to always allow), and it kicks back to login.

            Try turning security OFF on the server and retest.

              Hi Steve,

              I hope you drove to some place nice, and happy new year!

              Thanks for your suggestion. It was not the security - it was that I was so tired that I typed in the wrong page. Now, I do not get the login screen. The script seems to run, but does not close the popup. It gives me a white screen in the popup with "javascript to close browser" on the first line of the display.

              I put the following in the source tab of the a5w page:

              <html>
              <head>
              <script language="JavaScript">
              window.opener='X';
              window.open('','_parent','');
              window.close();
              </script>
              <title></title>
              </head>
              <body>
              <p>javascript to close browser</p>
              </body></html>

              Nothing else is on the page.

              Any ideas?

                It works when I try it. I am using IE. I attached my two test files.

                - I'm in a home with a half-dozen screaming 4-8 year olds and going to Disney Land tomorrow. Of course, I'm up here with my laptop and oblivious to it all at the moment.

                  Thanks for that Steve. I am curious - do you (or anyone) use popups in the way that I a describing?

                  Gary

                  (by the way, enjoy Disney Land :))
