Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    button in detail view

how to add few button in detail view section?
i meant, from main grid to detail view,

I wish to have button to do other function(s)
i gather the purpose of "detail view" is to view grid data or update
related field within the parent Grid.

Can I have several variable data entry fields within the detail view?
and can i place buttons(s) to perform xbasic codes ?
just can not see anything within the properties

    appreciate assistance/guidance?

    thanks

    Re: button in detail view

You can use the freeform designer to add whatever you want, including buttons.

        Re: button in detail view

It depends on what you want those buttons to do. Too many possibilities for anyone to guess what might constitute a "good example."

          Re: button in detail view

Thanks Steve, I agree and apology for such broad request.

in my real sample, i have 3 fields show
          reference number,part number & description,
          which is permanent (read only)

i was hoping to add 2 variable field(s)
first being usage reference number ( 10 digits characters)
second being an entry in character (20 digits long) representing the defective serial number to be reported.

then the magic button is to take the above 5 fields of data
posted to an xyz.table in sql ( this part i know well)

so taking 3 field data plus 2 variables and insert is what i am trying to
accomplish. i have done it with a seperate screen, like a pop up
but found it too slow and having to close the window too many times
for a typical 20 lines of posting.

While i notice with pre-loaded detail view (pre-fetch)
i enjoy excellent result, but now stuck on how to add the 2 variables and button.

          thanks

            Re: button in detail view

Outta time tonight for a detailed suggestion, but generally:

Consider an AJAX approach. Deadly easy once you learn it, and very very fast.

Look at the sample Web Application Demo database that comes with A5. Study the first AJAX example. You can see that all it's doing is using the button's OnClick event (which you can create when you use the freeform design) to pass a couple values along to an A5 AJAX Callback page.

There's no reason that callback page can't simply take the values fed to it to create a record in your table. I've done this in a couple places, but can't remember where so couldn't find it right away.

If that doesn't make sense or you need more, I'll be back in (I hope) a little bit sometime later tonight.
