Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using remote desktop in a web app

Before you guys have helped me with this command:"sys_shell("C:\Windows\System32\mstsc.exe /v:{" +name+"} /console")", to use in the desktop version.

I need to move this to the web, I have a field name, Name, that I want to 'link" so that when people click on it it will open up the remote desktop for that computer.
    Hope you can help.

    Thanks
    Roelof

Roelof I think you might have a little bit of a technology issue that you have to overcome first. You can't open up Microsoft remote desktop connections from the web. You can however configure a computer that you want to connect to over the web with something called Remote Desktop Webconnection. It is a program that runs via IIS installed on the computer you want to connect to and then you can link to it, with an address like http://ipaddress:8081/tsweb/. For information on this configuration check out this MS article, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...p_03may16.mspx.

Another option is using a purely web base remote desktop application like Logmein.com. The pro version allows you to create a web shortcut to your remote computer that you could include in your system for linking. I think there might be a few other options depending on your setup, like if you the Juniper Networks VPN suite or others that provide a web based Remote Desktop solution, but in order to link to a remote desktop via a web link inside or outside of Alpha there is some work you will need to do to enable that type of functionality.

Hope that points you down a workable path.

Won't work. Even if the command works, it will fire on the server, opening a remote desktop connection between the server and 'name'. You can't execute anything on the client's computer using WAS.

But I suppose you could initiate a download of a file (shortcut) containing the remote desktop command. The user could put this on their desktop, and then click it to run. But the user has to download and decide to click the shortcut, you can't make it run directly from the WAS.

        Steve,
Maybe I don't understand A5 enough but can't you code an external link in an A5W page to open in a new browser window? So as long as he used one of the web remote desktop options I listed, all the users browser would do is open a new browser window which would allow them to then log onto the remote computer via that new web browser. Which would have nothing to do with the A5 server.

Our posts overlapped, my comment was about the Windows-based remote desktop, which resides on the client machine. What you propose would work because they are web-based solutions.

Have a look at tightVNC/RealVNC and the built in web plug-in, we have this working very well for several servers.

By default this always runs on port 5800 so you can link to a machine in a browser window with this link: http://wwww.EXTERNAL-IP-ADDRESS-OF-PC:5800/
